Grimshaw, Immigrants to Tuscola County, Michigan in 1865
Location of Tuscola County, from Wikipedia
(Note: Webpage in preparation)
Joseph Grimshaw apparently immigrated to Nova Scotia from England in about 1843. He and Marinda Ostrander were married in Canada on an unknown date and moved to Michigan in 1865. They apparently subsequently lived for a time in Ontario and then returned to Michigan, where they settled in Tuscola County and left a number of descendants.
Thanks go to Christopher F Grimshaw for providing excellent descendant information and photos of Joseph and Maria (Hazelton) Grimshaw and their descendants.
County Biography
Important information on the Joseph and Marinda (Ostrander) Grimshaw family (and their daughter, Emeline) has been located in a biography for Tuscola County, Michigan1, 2. This information is shown below.
p. 441-450:
JOSEPH GRIMSHAW, who is a well-to-do farmer situated on section 22, Watertown Township, Tuscola County, is a native of England and was born January 13, 1825. His parents, Frederick and Elizabeth (Anderson) Grimshaw, lived and died in England, the father passing away in 1881, at the age of eighty-three, and the wife dying in 1851. They were the parents of five sons and three daughters. Until he reached the age of eighteen, Joseph Grimshaw remained in England, and after crossing the ocean he spent two years in Nova Scotia, and then went to Canada. He was a member of the Second Battalion Rifle Brigade, Regular Reserve Force; he enlisted at Swakleys, October 11, 1842, and served for five years and two hundred and one days. He then purchased his time and was discharged April 15, 1848, having jointed for twenty-one years.
Our subject was married in Canada, to Marinda Ostrander, a Canadian, and a daughter of Isaac and Deborah (Starkey) Ostrander. Both were Canadians, and the parents of two sons and four daughters, and Mrs. Grimshaw was born August 6, 1824. Mr. Ostrander was a farmer by occupation. He was bereaved of his wife in 1831, and survived her until 1865.
To our subject and his wife have been born seven children, namely: William C., Emeline E., Adeline, Caroline, Isaac H., Joseph T. and Angeline M. Mrs. Grimshaw had been previously married to William Gittins, and had two sons by this marriage, Barnard and Thomas. Mr. Grimshaw and his wife came to Watertown Township in 1865, and took charge of a farm which they worked on shares, and finally purchased. It is a fine tract of forty acres upon which they reside. He has cleared away the timber and erected excellent buildings, and did much pioneer labor.
Mr. Grimshaw has been a life-long Republican, and although he is not what may be called a politician, he has been raised to numerous township offices, having been Highway and Drainage Commissioner and Constable. Charles Grimshaw, the grandfather of our subject, was a native of England, and had a family of three sons, and the maternal grandparents with whom our subject resided for two years in his youth, were John and Elizabeth Anderson, both of English birth, and the parents of two sons and three daughters. Mrs. Grimshaw’s grandfather, John Ostrander, and his wife Christian Ostrander, were of New Jersey birth, and saw all their large family of nine sons and nine daughters grow to maturity. Mrs. Christian Ostrander brought up five grandchildren, besides her own numerous flock. Mr. John Ostrander, the father of this large family, was a British soldier in the War of 1812, and took part in the battle of Lundy’s Lane. He received a land grant from the British Government for his services, and went to Canada to reside upon it and there died.
p. 458-461:
CHARLES B. KINNEY. Prominent among the agriculturists of Watertown township, Tuscola County, is he whose name appears at the head of this paragraph. He was born in Canada, August 31, 1847, and is a son of Amos l. and Matilda (Waddell) Kinney, of who mention will be found elsewhere in this Record. Our subject was reared in Canada through the early years of his youth, and at an age of eight migrated with his parents too Michigan, and from that time has made his home in Watertown Township. He was a farmer, until he reached the age of twenty-one, and then began working in the woods.
In 1869 Mr. Kinney purchased forty acres of land and had as his only capital in life $100, which he received from his parents, and from that he has made his property. He now owns one hundred and sixty acres of excellent land, most of which he has cleared, and eighty-five acres are now improved. His beautiful home was erected by him in 1888.
On August 7, 1870, this young man was untied in marriage with Emeline, daughter of Joseph Grimshaw, who had come too Canada at an early day and emigrated too Watertown township in 1865. His daughter, Mrs. Kinney, was born in Canada in 1853. Four children have been born too Mr. and Mrs. Kinney, and their names are Linus A., Mina M., Matilda D., and Leroy C. Mina is at school at Mayville, having already graduated from the Fostoria Schools, and the other children are still beneath the parental roof. Mr. Kinney is an earnest Republican in his political views and was for a few terms a member of the Board of Review.
The great-grandfather of our subject was born in Ireland and became the progenitor of the family in this country, settling in Massachusetts and their living and dying. He belonged too Washington’s Army and rose too the rank of Captain. He was wounded at the battle of Bunker Hill. After his term of service he was physically incapacitated for labor and received a pension from the government throughout the remainder of his life.

Family Stories from Christopher Grimshaw
Christopher provided the following interesting “family tidbits” in two e-mails sent in June 2008.
BTW: Did you ever take notice that Ila Maude Grimshaw lived 102 years?! 1893 – 1995! I had the privilege of talking with her the year before she died at a family reunionit was pretty neat. She was still getting around, lively and mobile. So happy to see everyoneand to explain who you were, you had to go back thru the family tree and then, BING! She got it and knew EXACTLY who you were! It was neat. I hope theres more longevity in our family!
BTW: regarding stories or interesting info – I’m still contemplating things, I haven’t ignored your request…
You already know about Joseph T. (b.1825) being knighted by Queen Victoria…Aunt Ila (b.1893) told that story.
Then I’ve been trying to get more info on John Ostrander, the British soldier in the War of 1812 “Lundy’s Lane”. I haven’t gotten a response yet.
Does your family hold onto things forever? Like even clothes?
My father (Lowell A.) had his father’s (Joseph A.) bathrobe my entire life until it was so thin it was shredding at the elbows and shoulders. I got my parents to take a picture of me in it in 2005, just before they tore it into rags. There’s a picture of Grandpa wearing it in 1961!!! No telling how old it was in THAT picture! LOL!
A rather unique item is that Grandma Clara put together a full-size wreath made up of HAIR! This is not some gross thing – it is very elaborately done with pipe cleaners and ribbons and beads set in a deep glass box-frame. Hair from the whole family went into it! My dad’s got that hanging in their living room.
-He’s got HIS OWN childhood little wooden rocking chair, and some mini toy soldiers from the 1930’s when they were made of metal.
-The one thing passed down through several generations is a GIANT glass marble about 3 inch diameter that goes to the YOUNGEST of the children at the parents’ time of death…Grandma Clara TEETHED on it as a baby in 1902-1903! – there’s even pock-marks on it!

John M. Grimshaw, Another (Apparently Unrelated) Grimshaw Immigrant to Michigan
John provided a very clear and complete chart for his family. His father, John S. Grimshaw, was born in 1881 and apparently married first in England, where some his children were born (and remained.) John and his wife then apparently immigrated to Michigan, where he married a second time and had additional children. Johns letter reads as follows:
14N. Ellwood Ave.
Baltimore,
MD 21224
March 28, 1980
Mr. Edwin Grimshaw
The attached copy of my family tree will show you, that we apparently are of a different branch.
My recollections are somewhat vague. Some of the dated might not be exact. As you can see, our family is not very cohesive.
My father, John S., was from Hull in Yorkshire . He was a dairyman.
I, being the only Grimshaw in Baltimore, get some input from people as to its uncommonness. I do know it is not uncommon in New England. There are quite a lot of Grimshaws in Nova Scotia & New Brunswick.
Somewhere back in King Arthurs time, we may have a common ancestor. I wish you luck in your research.
