Grimshaw Records in the Parish Church

Registers of Lancashire and Yorkshire, England

(Note: Webpage in preparation)

The Grimshaw family originated near Eccleshill, southeast of Blackburn, around 1000 to 1200 A.D. The “main stem” of the family relocated to Clayton-le-Moors, northeast of Blackburn, in the mid 1300s. Thus branches of the family were starting generally in the area around Blackburn and migrating to other parts of Lancashire and to adjacent Yorkshire from there. By the time parish church registers were starting to be regularly kept in the 1500s, Grimshaws were being christened, married and buried in many parishes in Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire as well as other “centers” where early migrants established family lines. The purpose of his webpage is to present entries of members of the Grimshaw family in parish registers from the area around Blackburn.

Lancashire Parish Register Society – Published Volumes

Sources of Parish Register Information

The primary source of baptism, marriage and burial information recorded in the registers of parish churches in Lancashire is a series of books published by the Lancaster Parish Register Society starting before 1900. To date approximately 150 volumes have been published; they are listed in Table 1 (at the end of this webpage) in the order published (by volume number). For each volume, an indication is given whether it is held in the LDS Family History Library, the number of Grimshaws indicated (if examined), and whether it is indexed on this webpage.

A map showing the locations of parish churches around Blackburn is shown in Figure 1 below. Many members of the Grimshaw family also found their way to parishes in nearby Yorkshire. Maps of parishes in Yorkshire are shown in Figures 2 and 3.

Figure 2. Map of parish churches in the West Riding of Yorkshire (northern portion). From Humphrey-Smith1, p. 41A.

Strategy for Records Presented on This Webpage

The overall strategy in acquiring and posting Grimshaw records for this webpage is to start with the two parishes – Blackburn and Whalley – that include the two prominent locations of the early Grimshaw family Eccleshill and Clayton-le-Moors.) Parish church listings of Grimshaws are then provided generally in order of the number of individuals “posted” in the registers.
