The Edwin A Grimshaw Collection of American Grimshaw Family Lines
Tabulation of Responses and Text of Response Letters
Main Webpage on the Edwin A. Grimshaw Collection
A little over 20 years ago Ed Grimshaw of Lake Charles, Louisiana, purchased a book of Grimshaw family information offered by Beatrice Bayley. In an effort to trace his family history, Ed sent inquiries to the nearly 600 Grimshaws listed in Bayley’s book. He received 74 responses to his inquiry letter. These responses, received in 1979 and 1980, comprise a valuable record of Grimshaw immigrants to the U.S. and their descendants. In many cases, the information in Eds collection serves as a valuable “starting point” for further research into the various American Grimshaw family lines.
The book by Bayley, Eds letter of inquiry, and the most valuable and complete responses are described in the main webpage on Eds collection. The purpose of this webpage is to present a complete tabulation of the responses as well as the text of the letters received. In addition, Ed has tabulated all the individuals mentioned in his collection. This tabulation is also shown.

Grimshaw, Margaret M., Cambridge, Mass (EAG 2)
19 Garden Street, Apt. 21
Cambridge, Mass. 02138
October 9, 1979
Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
I was born in Providence, Rhode Island, June 4, 1890. My father was born in England and came to New England when young, was buried in Providence, R.I.
As a child I thought grim meant not pleasant and shaw meant wood, which may have been not right (although I was definitely told is was)
I had two older half-brothers, born here, died long ago.
Best wishes for your family tree.
Sincerely yours,
Margaret M. Grimshaw
P.S. You know – at least Ive been told, that Grimshaw is now the name of many in England.

My husband (Milton) passed on 3 years ago so I will answer your letter. He also did start tracing the Grimshaws but didnt keep it up, so I gave all the papers to our son. We only had the one son, but he has 4 sons.
I told my son of your letter so he was interested – said he would write but to get him to move a bit faster, I will send you his address so you can write to him.

Grimshaw, Donald, Plymouth, MA 02360 (EAG 4)
Dec 4, 1979
I am sorry for having delayed this so long. Last August, I moved from Boston to Plymouth and have been extremely busy.
As near as I can tell, I have no knowledge of any of the names listed on the other side. Two or three of the names are the same as some of those in my family but the birth dates dont coincide. My ancestors were born much earlier than any shown on your list.
Sorry I couldnt help.
Sincerely,
Donald Grimshaw

Sorry the delay in answer to your request to trace your genealogy. I just got back from Scotland and have traced back to the early 1700, very interesting.
My husband passed away two years ago. Ray Grimshaw, his father came from Canada, mother Minnie Fleetwood from Liverpool, England. I know there is a St in Canada, called Grimshaw. There are also some Grimshaws in New York State. I am sorry cant give you very much information, but I will forward the information to Rays brother in Florida, he may be able to help.

Grimshaw, Steve, Augusta, Maine, (EAG 6)
Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
Im sorry its been awhile on writing back but as far as I know, if were related the relation must go very far back. All my descendants got here to the new world by way of Canada from Ireland and France. I really dont know much about where my folks come from but on my fathers side they came from Ireland (which is close enough to England). So as we may or should be related some time way back.) If there are a lot of people with, French decent in your area, we may be related more recently from the old French possessions in the new world. Maine has many people of French Decent at least 150,000 Mainers were born or parents were born in Canada. (World Almanac and book of facts) If you have anymore light on the subject, please write back.
Sincerely,
Steve Grimshaw

Grimshaw, Stanley R., South China, ME, (EAG-7)
South China, Maine
Oct. 26, 1979
Dear Mr. Grimshaw
I admire your efforts in tracing our genealogy, but am afraid I have little to offer. Due to a difference [in] our religion, I know very little about my fathers family.
I believe he had a twin brother, at least he had a brother named Joseph, whereabouts unknown. He had two sisters: Elizabeth Welsh [John]; Annie Goodwin [Harry]. Elizabeth lived in Dover, N.H. [She] had a large family, only three that [I] knew. John, Velma & Raymond.
Annie lived in Kennebunk, Maine. [She] had two children, I never met.
My father, John, born 1888, died 1950. My mother, Carrie, born 1891, died 1946. Lived in Augusta most of life.
There were eight members of my family.
Donald, born 1913, wife Alexandria Roussell, son Gary born July 1940.
Mildred Zientara [Thadius], born 1915, no family.
Stanley, 307-17, wife Pauline Hemphill, 5-21-17, daughter, Sandra Thomas, 5-10-44, son, Richard, 11-18-47.
Marjorie Dennett [Donald], born 1919, 5 children.
Jane Cunningham [Damon], 4 boys.
Madeline unmarried.
Dorothy Hart [Byron], 3 children.
Gail Woodward [Edwin], son Michael, dau Brenda.
Four of us are g-parents, if you want the latest up-date.
Our whole family live in and around Augusta. Afraid I have lost track of the girls birthdates. Since the death of our parents I see very little of the girls, but Donald & I are very close. Perhaps he has some further information for you.
Good luck in your endeavor.
Stanley R. Grimshaw

Grimshaw, Norman – Rutland, Vt – (EAG 8)
Rutland, Vt
10/16/1979
Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
Recently I received your inquiry concerning your family tree and I was very much interested until I showed it to my mother who is 89 years old this month.
She went over the chart that you sent me, but said that there is no way that the two Grimshaw families are related.
Our Grimshaw family originated in Manchester, England. My fathers father was named Edward and my father was named Hugh Edward. He married my mother who was born in Stowe, Vt and her name was Francis Gates Stockwell.
Sorry I wouldnt help you more.
Good luck

Mr. E.A. Grimshaw
A few lines in reply to your request about the Grimshaws. The Grimshaws originally came from France to England and settled on the Isle of Man. My branch of the family were in the textile business, and came from Lancaster. They settled in Macclesfield about 20 miles from Manchester. My Great Grandfather Hugh Grimshaw and his children were silk manufacturers as were his brothers and their children.
I am enclosing two charts, one of my Great grandfather and one of his brothers. The reason for this is one of Great Grandfathers brothers and his sons build and ran a silk mill in Paterson New Jersey in 1872. I am also enclosing a small sketch of the Grimshaw coat of arms. I was born in Macclesfield, Eng. myself and would like some idea of where Droylsdon and Strathmore are located.I would like to know if you would be kind enough to send me the name of the place to send for a list of names as I know there are some in Connecticut that are related to us. So as not to give you the impression that I know a great deal about England I was only two years old when I came here. My brother Frederick of Plock Road, Clifton wont be writing as he doesnt have any of this data and I told him I was sending it to you. If you could let me know what kind of information you are interested in, I will try to help if I can. P.S. Sorry one of the charts is a little messy, but drop me a line if you need to know more.
Sincerely, yours,
Miss Marian Grimshaw

Fischer, Edith – Hawthorne, NJ – (EAG 10)
My Dear Miss Grimshaw,
I am sorry to be so slow in answering your letter but I have been very busy.
Please pardon the writing as my eve is giving me a little trouble.
About looking up our ancestors, Grace and I did quite a bit of that some years ago but we didnt get in to it so thoroughly. I have sent a few things to you which might be of interest but most of our results were about our own family which I dont think would interest you and I am not able to start again. I just finished making a report for one of my nieces.
I am sending you the name of my neighbors who is interested and might be a help.
Wishing you great success, I am.

In the 18th century, the British took to traveling for pleasure. It was an age of elegance and the British were the wine connoisseurs of Europe. They not only bought the wine but often the vineyards. They often then settled locally and married the daughter of the next vineyard owner. The housed themselves usually have British names like Cockburn, Williams, Dow, etc. The bulk of the wine produced in Jeres or Oporta is made and owned by Anglo-Spanish or Anglo Portuguese. That must be why there are Grimshaws in France now. A cousin of ours met a man who told him that he knew some Grimshaws who lived in France. Two old Aunts told my sister that the Grimshaws came from France with the Huguenots and she said that an ancestor of the Grimshaws sailed with Captain Cook and was killed with him by the natives of Hawaii.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
Received your letter. My husbands father (Wilfrid) was born in England but he has since died. He kept in contact with people in England but my husband did not, therefore he hasnt any information other than a name we found in my father-in-laws address book. Shortly before his death in 1976, we do know that a cousin in England phoned my father-in-law, requesting information. Since he also was attempting to trace family members. They corresponded several times than my father-in-law became ill and died. What they talked & wrote about we do not know (Wilfrid lived in Florida), but we have this mans name and telephone #:
Mr. Edwin Tom Costello
16 Church Rd.
Stanlry, Liverpool I 3
England
Phone# 051-228-3147
Also when our son was born 25 years ago (John) someone from England who did correspond with my mother-in-law sent her info about a John Grimshaw who was an attorney in England, but I can not find this information either.
Sorry we could not have been more of a help to you, but since my husband has no living relatives on Grimshaw Side, I do not known where we can question anyone.
Sincerely yours,

Grimshaw, S. R. – Trenton, NJ – (EAG 13)
Dear E. A. Grimshaw,
I have looked over your charts and I dont think my branch of the family are related. My side of the family came from Manchester, England about 1870. The name Grimshaw as you may not know means Grims Woods, which was the name of this family in England named Grimm. It was later spelled Grimshaw, Shaw being an old English word meaning forest. There is a t present a town in Lancastershire County, England. It was told to me that many people took there name from the town. So you may find many people with the name Grimshaw with that name who are not really related. I guess my family moved from Lancastershire to the city of Manchester and then immigrated to southern Massachusetts and later to Philadelphia, Pa. and parts of New Jersey.
Im sorry I cant provide more information but it was nice hearing of your side of the family. There is an interesting family crest also.
Sincerely,
S. R. Grimshaw

Dixon, Robert A. – Bolton, Connecticut – (EAG 14)
January 21, 1980
Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
Recently my cousin, Norman Grimshaw of Lullow, Vermont, sent me your letter to him which told of your attempt to trace the Grimshaw genealogy. I have reviewed your “family tree” and see no name that I recognize.
I, too, am trying to trace the Grimshaws, but am having difficulty in doing so. My mother was a Grimshaw. Her name was Ada Mary Grimshaw, born September 15, 1892. She married twice to Arthur Dixon and Raymond Barker, and died July 22, 1978. (She was born in Glastonbury, Connecticut). Her father (my grandfather) was Edward Grimshaw who was born April 24, 1857 in Prestich, England. On October 13, 1881, he married Mary Ann Heywood. They had 6 children, Hugh, Walter, Sarah Ellen, May, Clara, and my mother, Ada.
Edward died December 27, 1924 in Hartford, Connecticut and is buried in Glastonbury, Connecticut.
I know that his parents were John and Sarah Walker Grimshaw, but I have been unable to learn any more about them. Letters of inquiry to various people in Prestwich, England have not brought any satisfactory responses.
If you have learned anything of this line of Grimshaws, Id appreciate your sharing it with me. I, in turn, will keep your “tree” in my file and check it against anything I uncover – and, of course, advise you of any findings.
Thank you – and best wishes,
Robert A. Dixon

Whiting, New Jersey 08759
October 27, 1979
Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
I doubt if I can be of any help to you in your search for the genealogy of your family. None of the names in your tree are familiar to me.
My husband was David Grimshaw who was born in 1908 in Rutherford, New Jersey. (He died in 1952) His father was Thomas, born in Macclesfield, England about 1872. The brothers and sister, that I knew, were John, Joseph, and Annie. They all came to the United States in the early 1900s. Another brother, David, remained in England, along with 2 or 3 others.
The family of Judge John Grimshaw, who lived in Paterson, New Jersey, was distantly related to my husbands family.
They were all originally from Macclesfield, or its vicinity where they were connected with the silk business, which they continued in this country.
Sorry I couldnt be more helpful. If any of this information fits in, Ill be glad to add any thing more that I can.
Sincerely,
Agnes C. Grimshaw

Dear Mr. Grimshaw
I am sorry to have been so slow in answering your request for any information on the family names mentioned in your family tree.
My husband is the Grimshaw (Fred M.). However, after studying your names he does not recognize any of them as members of his family. Although his father was one of several children, they were all born in the vicinity of East Hampton, L.I., N.Y.
Sorry not to be of any help.
Good luck in your search.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Grimshaw:
In response to your letter, perhaps I can help a little although none of the names on your chart are familiar to me.
The name Grimshaw is originally a Welsh name and the family in early English history spilled over into Lancashire and Chesire which are north western counties, bordering Walesand and near Warrington and Manchester. You will find two versions of the family crest listed in Burkes, Peerage ———————————————– which you can probably find at your local library. The earliest record that I have seen ———————————————– reflecting modern family history ———————————————–was in the church registry at Standish. In those records I found co-mingled with our family name those of Miles Standish and several other common Pilgrim names. The related dates were late 1500s and early 1600s.
More recently, the family name has spread all over Britain, and is quite common in every city directory. I am convinced that they are all originally from the same rootstock. Logically it follows that any family offshoots in this country could also be tied back together even though they may have emigrated at different times. My family group I have traced back to eastern Canada, which is where my father was born. He came to this country as a young man.
Now I have some questions. Where did you get your list and how authentic is it? How large a list is it? Where does your rootstock come from – back two or three generations? Ill be glad to swap information with you.
I was born in Grand Forks, N. Dak. Age 62, and lived for several years in England. Hope that you find the above of some use to you.
Sincerely,
Hebert J. Grimshaw

Dear Mr. Grimshaw
I too have wondered about the genealogy of my family but have only very meager information.
My father born in 1883, married to Alice Roarke, was born in N.Y.C. and died about one year ago at the age of 95. He lived in N.Y.C. most of his life and his parents died at any early age so I know nothing about his parents other than their names – William Grimshaw and Jennie Attridge, both born in England.
Since the name is so unusual, I imagine there is a relationship some where along the line between your family and mine but it probably goes back to the early 1800s or before.
Sorry I have not been much help to you.
Did you know that there is a tiny town in Canada (Province of Alberta) by the name of Grimshaw? I retired recently so some day I may take a trip up there and perhaps learn something of its history. Perhaps in the meantime you might send an inquiry to that town.
If I should develop any new information, I will be glad to pass it along.
Sincerely,
George E. Grimshaw Jr.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
Thank you for a copy of your “family tree”.
I am afraid that I cannot specifically fill in any of the gaps.
My wife and I are from England, having lived in this country for ten years now.
The Grimshaw name is common to the north of England, particularly the Manchester area, but generally know in the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire. We are from Bolton.
Droyslden and Oldham, on your chart, are in the immediate Manchester area.
A better known Grimshaw was the Reverend of Haworth in Yorkshire, home of the Bronte sisters (Wuthering Heights). I have a small book called Rev. Grimshaw of Hawark Hall, obtained from the local bookstore in the village. I am sure that if you write a note to the Bronte Museum, Haworth, Yorkshire, England, that they would be most helpful. We are in the process of moving house, and I have packed my books, but in the event that you cannot locate, I will loan you my copy when it is unpacked. Our new address will be
363 Robin Hood Drive
Yardley, Pa. 19067
I occasionally visit Morgan City, La., at which time perhaps we can arrange to meet.
Best wishes,
Vince Grimshaw

Dear “EAG”
I am receipt of your recent letter concerning the genealogy of the Grimshaw clan. I have looked very carefully over the list of names submitted and regret to advise that none of the names are familiar to me. I can track my ancestry back to my grand father William Born in Accrington, England and my grand mother Emily. They emigrated in 1800 to Bordentown, New Jersey and raised their family. First William then Margaret and then Frank. Next came Lamar (my father born in 1870). He married Lilla my mother born in 1872.
They raised 3 children, Herbert (thats me), Russell, and Gertrude.
During my association with the company, which employed me, I traveled extensively. Some of my “ports of call” which should interest you was the Jefferson Island Salt Co. at New Iberia, which I toured and the Texaco Oil Plant at Port Arthur.
Several years ago (1978), I had correspondence with a Charles Grimshaw of Renton, in the state of Washington seeking similar to your request.
It is possible that if you should care to write to him that he could help you in your endeavors.
His name and address is:

Good luck to you

The attached copy of my family tree will show you, that we apparently are of a different branch.
My recollections are somewhat vague. Some of the dated might not be exact. As you can see, our family is not very cohesive.
My father, John S., was from Hull in Yorkshire. He was a dairyman.
I, being the only Grimshaw in Baltimore, get some input from people as to its uncommonness. I do know it is not uncommon in New England. There are quite a lot of Grimshaws in Nova Scotia & New Brunswick.
Somewhere back in King Arthurs time, we may have a common ancestor. I wish you luck in your research.

If you receive any info that relates to my family tree please advise me. Also I will reimburse you for a listing of the Grimshaws that live in New Jersey. That listing would be of significant help to me.
Keep me advised, please of how you progress.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
Unfortunately, I am the widow of a Grimshaw (Harry Charles), and I dont have any real information for you.
My father-in-law was James F. Grimshaw who was born in this country and would have fitted into the Third column in your “tree”. He comes from Pennsylvania, but he had lived at some time in Boston and in New York City. He married Etta Goode and they had five children: Gertrude, C. Ray, James, Harry, and Frank. The last three are deceased. Ray lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Gertrude is Mrs. C. R. Croul of Corona del Mar, California.
When I knew the family, they lived in Wood Ridge, Bergen County, New Jersey, and had lived there for a number of years. Perhaps census records of 1910, 1920, etc. would give other details of birthplace, etc.
I am sending your letter to Richard Croul, one of Gertrudes sons, because he is interested in family history and may be able to find out some things from his mother. Richards address is:
427 Fernleaf Avenue
Corona del Mar, California 92625
Good luck in your search! I can trace my mothers family back to 1794, but Ive never gone beyond that. My fathers people emigrated from Germany, so theres little hope of tracing them – but its fun to hunt for our “roots”.
Cordially,
Hattie I. Grimshaw (Mrs. Harry C.)

April 14, 80
Dear Mr. E. A. Grimshaw –
Found your letter very interesting. Your branch of the family may go back to my husbands grand fathers family. His grand father was Richard Edward Grimshaw and one of thirteen children – most of whom were boys.
He came to East Hampton, L.I.N.Y. at an early age, I believe 16, and as far as I know, always lived there and died at age 83. Dont remember if he had been born in that area.
His only child, son, Chauncey Edward, D. had 2 sons. William John, killed in auto accident at age 21 and my husband, Fred A. (Frederick) D. 1979. We have 2 children; Richard John, living in Lititz, Pa and a daughter, Carol Baggett, living in Mesquite, Texas. Richard has 2 daughters, married, and one son, John Frederick, who is in the Air Force in Okla.
Since we moved from Long Island to Fla. 9 years ago, we often had people stop by to ask if we know Grimshaws from Mich, Boston etc. None of which were known to us.
Hope this may be of some help to you.

Dear E. A.
Above not knowing your name. Your letter & genealogy data received. Sure surprised. Assume you purchased the book put out by a lady living in Pennsylvania; have heard of it, but not much helpful data.
I have perused the data shown but unable – from the data to make any connection. Oldest date of a Grimshaw shown – Edwin? or Edward ? is 1838.
My ancestor Joseph G – came to this country in 1807, he was born in 1765 in Rawdin, Leeds, Yorkshire, Eng. & settled in New York State. I have his ancestors traced back into the 1600s in England, and his descendants pretty much up to the present, am missing a few of them in the middle 1800s.
It sure takes a lot of time and work to put together, with expense. I believe our only connection would have to be tied in from & to English, England ancestors. I have the record of quite a few.
I noticed an Ellen Wilde born in Oldham, Lancaster. In my research of various Gr families have contacted some whose ancestors came from there.
Have you no knowledge when your ancestor, name, etc came from England & to where. I have found some from N. Jersey & a lot from Canada, as well as other states. If you can give moiré information, might be able to help. Be glad to. We are spending the winter in Florida, return to N.Y. in May. Until middle of May – use Florida address. Hope to hear from you.
Best to you,
Henry Grimshaw

Dear Mr. Grimshaw
I just came across your letter regarding genealogy, am not sure if I answered this; am of the opinion that I have but just to be sure will send you this. Some of my correspondence got mixed and set aside, so if I didnt answer that is the reason.
In going over the names on the record you showed on the back of your letter, I cannot identify any of them, the dates and places. There are first names same as I have on my genealogy record, but nothing to correspond, as to dates and families. My ancestor came from Yorkshire, Rawdon, Calverley and Leeds. Yours evidently from Lancashire, various places. My ancestor Joseph Grimshaw came to this country in 1807.
In my research have come across Grimshaws who lived in Lancashire, Strathmore & Oldham but have been unable to connect. The connection with my family has to be made back in England. Have come in contact with families whose ancestors came over to Canada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. My experience so far, none can trace back into England so I might connect with some records I have of my family there. Possibly, you can, if you have records into the 1600 & 1700s.
I plan to go over some of my papers and correspondence this winter and if I find anything that might help you, will write. If you have some of the old records from over there, let me know. Have been unable to find anything plausible previous to the 1600s. In old records have found families back a number of centuries pervious but not way to bring up to dates known. As I understand, the English records are very incomplete as to the earlier centuries.
Sorry I cannot be of help. I hope with all the letters you have sent out, you have found some who have been able to give you the information you are looking for. If you have any data you think might give me clues, will appreciate it. The best of luck to you; hoping I may hear further from you.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw:
I have studied the family tree and there might be a connection with those mentioned in England.
My father was John George Grimshaw, born in London, England, in March around 1885/86. He had two older brothers, George and Harry, both born in London, dates of birth unknown; nor do I know the maiden names of their spouses. My father married Maud Mary Macklow, born in Enfield, England, in August about 1879.
George was a doctor in the British Navy, Harry was a wanderer. The last my father heard of him, he was cattle ranching somewhere in Montana.
I recall, as a young girl, my father telling some friends of his, that he had engaged the services of a genealogist who traced the family back to Oliver Cromwell, through the records at Somerset House, London, England; church and court registers in various shires. What happened to all this documentation after the death of my parents, I do not know. My brother Jack, living in England, my know, but I doubt it.
You have certainly taken on a tremendous task, and I wish I had more information to impart. If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know. The next time I visit my family in England, I might be able to dig up some more details.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Grimshaw

Dear E. A. Grimshaw,
We received your letter and “family tree”. We cant trace any of our family names to the names on the tree, but we do have a few ideas for you.
We belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) and we believe in doing a lot of genealogy. We do have quite a few John and Elizabeth Grimshaws in our lines, but they dont fit in your lines. Because we are “Mormons” we know that at every Mormon Chapel is a genealogy library. These libraries have classes on how to extract names and how to do genealogy etc. They also have microfilms of names that can help you find more names for your family tree. If they dont have anything you can use, they can send to Salt Lake City, Utah, where the largest genealogy library is and get more microfilms for you.
Our family traces back to Duckworth Grimshaw who came to the United States from England. He had 13 children. I am his great granddaughter through Randolph and then Doug Grimshaw, who you wrote to.
I hope this helps you and if we can help further please write.

Although we cant be of much help to you in your tracing the genealogy of your family we are very much interested and think maybe you could help my husband and his brothers and sisters.
They know nothing of their fathers family.
If by any chance you should hear from anyone related to a Percy Grimshaw, could you please let us know?
The only thing they know about him is that he was in the V.A. hospital in Dayton, Ohio (their mother meet him there) having come there from Penna. or the east.
After their mothers death they went to the O.S.S. O. home in Zenia and only saw their father a few times after that.

Edwin Armand Grimshaw,
I doubt very much if we are in any way related. However we have acquired this information on the history of our Grimshaw name. It has been copied from “St. Francois County, Missouri Pioneers – Their Ancestors and Descendants, Bicentennial Edition, 1776-1976, by Francis Marion Thurman, published by Family Histories, Inc., Portland, Oreg. 97203.”
My father and grandparents came from St. Francois and Jefferson Counties in Missouri.
Charles Grimshaw (my father) now living in Lincoln Park, Mi. told me his father (my grandfather) (Henry Grimshaw) had two brothers, George & Nathan who were fishermen in Wisconsin. Saw George once.
William Grimshaw (my uncle, deceased) mentioned he was a relative of a Lord Higginbotton living in England.
Perhaps some of this information may be beneficial. If I can be of any future help please dont hesitate to write.
Sincerely,
Charles Vernon Grimshaw
Note on Enclosure: I (Charles Vernon Grimshaw) am the last of the Grimshaw name from Henry Grimshaw. (I have no sons.)

Grimshaw, Lea, Jean, Ron, and Lisa – Great Falls, MT – (EAG 40)
April 20, 1980
Dear Mr. Grimshaw –
Your letter arrived a few days ago and its certainly nice to hear from another Grimshaw. It would be great to correspond with you and find out more about the family tree, as I am interested in this sort of think, but have never taken the time to pursue it. So please keep our name and address handy. We did live at 1504 14 St. So., but moved to Calif. In 1976 for 3 years. Last year we moved back “home” to Great Falls and found a house just 5 doors from our former address! So we now are at 1514 14 St. So.
After looking over your family tree, we find no familiar names, dates, places, ect. on it. But dont give up yet!! We are expecting company this summer – my husbands father, from Calif. Maybe he can shed some light on the subject. He has said that he read somewhere that the Grimshaws are descendants from Priscilla Mullan of the Mayflower. My husbands father & his children hail from Hartford, Conn. Mr. Herbert Taylor Grimshaw -(husbands father) had 3 sons:
Herbert Taylor Grimshaw, Jr. – April 10, 1940
Lea (LEA) Christopher Grimshaw – Aug 12, 1942
Jean Alden Grimshaw – Dec. 24, 1949
They were all born in Hartford and are all living. The other two boys are both married. Jean and (Mary Keenan) Grimshaw dont have any children. Herbert and (Nancy Carter) Grimshaw were married last July 4 and have no children. But this is Herbs 4th marriage and he has a son by his first wife (killed by auto accident) whose name is Don Grimshaw. He was born July 7, 1961, I believe. This boy still lives in Anchorage. Hert and Nancy have lived in Alaska, but are moving to Washington (state) in June and he plans to look for work this summer.
A little about our family. Lea and I married Sept 10, 1961. My name is Jean I. (Harner- maiden name). We have 2 children – Ronald Brian, age 15, born in Great Falls, Mt. Aug 21, 1964. Lisa Lea, age 11, born in Great Falls, Dec 6, 1968.
Im sorry you werent able to obtain any missing names and dates from us, but we just dont recognize any of them. Maybe this summer when Leas father comes up here, he can help. He is about 72 and might know a few names.
I could give you the address of Leas brother, Jean, in Calif, but Im not sure you would even hear from him. Hes also going to visit us this summer, so we can get all the brothers under one roof here. They havent been together with their Dad in 20 years! So it should prove to be interesting.
I sure hope you have a lot of response from other Grimshaw families you have written. Thanks again for your letter.
Sincerely

Mr. Grimshaw:
Thank you for the Grimshaw lineage you sent me. I dont believe any of the listed are related. The following is what I know of my immediate family background but have no records of the past lineage, for Grimshaw. I only have the lineage of my mothers side, who was a Webster, Converse (Noah and Daniel were her second cousins and the lineage goes way back to William the Conqueror on the Converse side. John Webster is as far back as the family had on Webster – he was born in England and came to this country in 1635 and founded Ipswich, Mass.
Frank B. Grimshaw (B. for Barstowe) was born to Jean and Joseph Grimshaw Aug. 10, 1882 in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England. They lived on the estate called “Hawthorne Villa”. The Villa, when my grandparents died was sold to England for a hospital during World War II. My dad did tell me that Arundel was part of the lineage. My sister was named Betty Arundel Grimshaw. This is all we know right now and when I can find time, I may delve deeper into it. I do know that the Mormon Church in Utah has the most extensive lineage background for every name but what the charges are for the information, I have no idea. Thank you again for writing.

Mr. Grimshaw;
Received your letter on 4-14-80. I cant be of any help. My parents divorced when I was six months old. I have never seen or heard of him, all I know is that he was born in LaSalle, Ill., and lived in Chicago, Ill. His name was Louis Grimshaw.
Sorry that I cant offer any more, but I checked the Dallas phone book there are only three listings other than mine, so here is a list as follows:
Grimshaw, Greg 9230 Emberglow Dallas
Grimshaw, Michael 8560 Park Lane Dallas
Grimshaw, Robt. Lee 905 Rancroft Dallas
These may already be on your list but if not it may help some. I have never had any contact with these people, so I do not know a thing about them. Good Luck to you, and you might drop a line every now and then about your progress.
Thank You!

Our family lines, as far as we know them, do not join. However, I am working on my genealogy, and we might be able to help one another at some future time. Therefore, I am including a brief cart on my Grimshaw line. This might also help you eliminate a few of my bunch from your list.
Best wishes for success on your project and let me know if I can help some way.

Dear Sir –
In response to your letter regarding the Grimshaw family –
My husband, Harry Edwin, died five years ago. He could possibly have helped you more than I.
I dont know if it is only happenstance, but many of the names on your “family tree” are in my husbands family. Namely –
Janie- (a half-sister of my husband)
Harry- (his name)
Edwin- (his fathers middle name was Edwin, as was my husbands. He told me once that back thru his line, E was the middle initial or name.)
Elizabeth
Ellen & Alice – marriage only
I think the best I can do for you is to refer you to my step-mother-in-law, who might know considerably more than I – her name is
Ellen Grimshaw

My husbands fathers name was Clinton E.
Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw:
I have compared your Grimshaw lines with mine. There are many common names in our family lines. I am enclosing a copy of what we call a pedigree chart that may help lead to something we can tie together.
My Grandfather Grimshaw came to the United States from England in the 1850s. He settled in Southern Utah in Beaver, Beaver County. He had 13 children; my father was #12. There is only one of fathers brothers and sisters living; he lives in Brigham City, Utah and was 84 years old last February. We have an active family organization and the descendants of my fathers brothers and sisters number several hundred. All of the Grimshaws in Utah that we know are related. We also have Grimshaw relatives in most states of the Western United States
I am planning a trip to England in June of this year. My wife and my brother and his wife from Cedar City, Utah are going to check on some of the areas in England from which our forefathers originated. My brother has a daughter and family in Mildenhall, England. My wife and I have a daughter and family living near Nurenburg, Germany. I will take a copy of your family tree to see if any of the names or places may fit with some of our lines.
Thank you for your letter and your interest in genealogy which is also an interest of mine. Success in your efforts.
Sincerely,
Paul R. Grimshaw

Dear Mr. Grimshaw;
I am very glad to hear from some other Grimshaw looking for genealogy. The Grimshaws you have written to in this area are all related and our grandparents seem to have similar names, but the dates are different.
My great grandfather Duckworth Grimshaw was born in Tottington, Lancashire, England, on March 3, 1842. He was a convert to the Mormon Church in 1860, and came to Utah in 1862 with another boy his age (14) and his father and mother came in 1863. My grandfather was named John and also my Great-great grandfather. They are all buried in the cemetery here at Beaver, Utah, just a few blocks from where I live. My grandparents were pioneers in this area and all of the Grimshaws in this area are of this family and are Mormons. My great-grandfathers posterity is now around 450.
I would be very interested in knowing where you found the list that you have. I have contacted some Grimshaw families but have received no information. I have checked phone books as I travel around the country but the results are scarce. There are Grimshaws buried in a cemetery in Rapid City, Robert E. & Mae Grimshaw, 1868-1926. Also my great grandfathers uncle was also named “Duckworth” and he left a family in England, came to New York about 1863, remarried and had a family there but we have no information about him at all.
There is no doubt in my mind that all the Grimshaws are related and came from England. Your Great grandfather could easily be a relative in the area that my family came from I have not traced my family to far back but member of the family have. Are you aware of the L.D.S. (Mormon) Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City? This is the most complete microfilmed research library in the world and is available to everyone. I would be happy to help you at a little later date. I am 50 years old now and plan to retire around the end of this year. I plan to do more genealogy on my line and also help with my wifes.
I would like very much to hear from you. You will undoubtedly receive many more responses to your letter from other Grimshaws. Earl Grimshaw is my father and Neil Grimshaw is my only brother.
Thanks for our interest.

Dear Mr. E. A. Grimshaw:
I enjoyed reading your letter. I know of no Clark Grimshaw. However our mailman is Norman Grimshaw and a cousin to my husband Henry. I tried to find Strathmore on the map but couldnt. I did notice that Ellen Wilde is from Oldham, Lanc. Couldnt find that on my map either. In researching the Grimshaw line in the Genealogical Library in Salt Lake a few years ago. We found that the Grimshaw name was very common (and almost as many as Jones) in the Church, Lanc. Area. If Strathmore is close to Church, Lanc. I suppose that you are a relative. The Genealogist for our Grimshaw family is Shirley Fotheringham – Box 153 – Paraganad, Utah 84760. She could probably give you more information that I.
As my husband and I have traveled around the United States we check the phone books out for Grimshaws and find one or two here and there but have never found any we could connect with our line.
Hope I have been of some help.

Dear Edwin,
Am appreciative of your letter & your interest & inquiry about the Grimshaws. Its always exciting to know that others are working on their genealogy. You have a big project but a most rewarding one.
In analyzing your pedigree chart am unable to tie any of the Grimshaws listed with our ancestors. In doing some searching in England we have found Grimshaw to be a quite common surname. It becomes a big challenge to find our true ancestors. All of our Grimshaws come from Lancashire County, England. You dont mention any location in England on your pedigree.
Im sorry I cant be of more specific help to you but hope you will find some common ties through your correspondence. We wish you well. If you ever come to Utah, do drop into see us.

Dear Edwin,
Im proud to hear from another Grimshaw who is interested in genealogy.
My family is suppose to have originated in England, but so far I have not traced them back that far. William Grimshaw my Great, Great Grandfather was suppose to have come from England. He was suppose to have had a brother by the name of George.
James Grimshaw, according to his marriage license was born in Norwich, Conn.
I have traced James son (Frank) by an earlier marriage to New Bedford, Mass.
James Gs second family was born in Texas (Bell Co.). I am from the 2nd family.
I am related to the following Grimhsaws;
Geo Grimshaw N.M. J. J. Grimshaw Tex.
Chas. Grimshaw N.M. Gene Grimshaw Tex
Thad Grimshaw N. C. J. R. Grimshaw Tex
F. L. Grimshaw N.M. Geo. Grimshaw Livingston, Tex
Any information you can provide would be appreciated.
I notice your father was born in Strathmore. I took this to be England. Am I correct?
There are also twins in our family. My dad had brothers born in 1903 and one of their sons also had twins.
My father was named after his Uncle George which was suppose to have been named after his Uncle George.
Hope you can read this letter and hope some of it makes sense to you. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Geo. N. Grimshaw
P.S. Enclosed is a copy of my ancestor chart. Ill try to make it more complete at a later date.

Dear Sir;
In response to your recent letter concerning the genealogy of your family, I am quite interested and we do have a limited amount of our family history, we do have relative Charles R. Grimshaw living in Renton, Wa., who has done considerable research and you may have contacted him but will include his address and am sure he will be very eager to hear from you.
My late husband Clinton Grimshaw was the third generation to live in this area of Southern Ohio, his Grandfather came here as a young man about or in early 1840- from England, so it seems there must be some connections – the following dates of three generations are.
Richard Grimshaw – Erie, Pa. – 2/2/1823 – 11/15/1902
Richard Benton Grimshaw – S Cioto Co. Ohio – 8/29/1860 – 3/6/1923

Dear Ed.
Thank you for your letter, most welcome.
Yes I met Mary Ellen Grimshaw in May of 1977. She lives on the Blue Run in Lucasville, Ohio.
My great grandfather Richard & his wife Nancy Ann (Rickett) Grimshaw had a homestead here in the 1840s. The old log home is still in use today but has posted from the family ownership. I think Marys home is on some of the old homestead land.
My father was a Chas R. A. Grimshaw born Nov. 11, 1891 at Lucasville, Oh. His father was a Jonathan A. Grimshaw born Dec 19, 1892 at Lucasville. Oh. His father was a Richard Grimshaw born Feb. 2, 1823 in Penna. His father was a Jonathan Grimshaw born (I have 2 locations) 1 Penna 2 New York (state) which is which I dont know. He was born about 1773. Was also a veteran of the war of 1812.
This is just a rough brake down. I can give you other family information on children ect. If we have a tie-in.
Do you have the book from Beatrice Bayley? I also have it here. It gives most of the Grimshaws in the U.S.A. at present time.
I write often to the following person he has lots of Grimshaw information.

I am trying to find some information on my great-grandfather James Grimshaw, who was borne in Conn in 1829. We do not have his birth certificate or know when his parents came to the USA. (His parents may have been William and Mary).
I am sending you a copy of a list of some Grimshaws from England. One of them is a George Edward.
I hope this will help you.

Enoch, Utah
Aug. 10, 1980
Dear E. A. Grimshaw
Please let us try. Your envelope has been in sight since you sent it last April 25. The enclosed letter is gone. Where I dont know. First it was to go to sister Wilma or sister Ina. I still dont know but today Im gathering a few loose ends together and your inquiry is one.
As I remember it you were asking for any information on Grimshaw ancestry.
Hunter, my husbands family came from England. They were converted by Mormon Missionaries there and came to Utah where they settled in Beaver, Beaver Country, Utah. All of the Grimshaws we know of in Utah are descendants of Duckworth Grimshaw who was the only son of John Grimshaw. There were sisters. But –
Our genealogy leaders subscribe to the Hartford, Conn. Newspaper because it had a genealogy column. They posted his sheet on the bulletin board in the church. One day we read a small notice on the sheet that read “Postmaster Norman Grimshaw reminds patrons there will be no mail service on _ _ _ because of _ _ _.” Dont really remember the exact words. We wrote to him. He referred us to his aunt Mrs. Harold G. Skinner of Broadbrook, Conn. Over the years we corresponded with her. She sent us lost of genealogy. Her story was and here is disappointment. Been so long. Her ancestor had come to Utah and been the court recorder or reporter at one of the first trials held in Utah. He returned to the east and the way I remember it stayed in the east.
This is one reason I didnt do anything. I dont know exactly where that genealogy is. This summer has been so busy and Im so slow and unorganized that things dont get done. So, no promises but Ill try and find it. Mrs. Skinner died several years ago. She had one son and I wrote a little to the daughter-in-law but the relationship ended.
So Im really not helping you much.
John Grimshaw came from Church Parish – Lancashire, England. Son Duckworth came from Tattington, Lancashire, England.
Im not a genealogist but each Sunday Im trying to get our records a little better organized. Hunters sisters are great genealogists. I hope your letter got to them and hopefully someone did something.
Please let me know if you are still interested.
Best wishes from
Lillian A. Grimshaw

Dear E. A. Grimshaw
I am afraid I can not tell you much about Dr. M. E. Grimshaw, & I dont know why the town of Grimshaw was named after him. He was in Medicine Hat & another Alberta town before he came to Peace River. He went from Peace River to Fairview, where he died in 1929. His daughter Doris was married many times & twice to the same man. Movie star Carradine & their son won a singing award last year. The doctors wife was Davis Fraser & she had an uncle who was a minister in Vancouver. I think of the Methodist Church.
They have one son Fraser who lives some where in Ontario. Doris lived at Oxnard where she died several years ago & also buried in the Water Hole Cemetery beside her parents. Its five miles from Fairview, Alta.
I had a friend who was going to visit the cemetery & get the dates on his head stone, but we have had so much snow, she has not been able to go. Dr. Grimshaw was a mason. Im sorry I can not be more of a help to you.

Dear E. A.
This is in reply to your undated letter which you sent to my sister, Miss Estelle R. Grimshaw, in Whiting, New Jersey in January 1980, addressing her as “Mr. Grimshaw”, regarding the tracing of the genealogy of your Grimshaw family. My sister sent your letter on to me in February 1980 since she is not familiar with Grimshaw family history. I am sorry that your letter was mislaid and never answered. I came across it at this late date and shall give you what information I know of my fathers family.
My father was William Ernest Grimshaw, born June 25, 1865 in Bordentown, New Jersey. He had an older brother, James Albert Grimshaw – I do not know the date or place of his birth, but I do know that he died suddenly on January 6, 1920 on Staten Island, N. Y. , at the age of about 56 or 57. This brother never married and so had no family. My father died May 12, 1937, I believe in a hospital in Washington, D. C.
Regarding my fathers father (my grandfather) I have no information, except I was told that he passed on when my father was a baby or a very young child. I think the elder Mr. Grimshaw might have been born in England, but of this I am not sure and I have no living relatives from whom to obtain such information.
My fathers mother was Esther Frances Wood – I do not know when or where she was born, but I do know that after the passing of her first husband (Mr. Grimshaw) she married an Edward Webster, who was born in England. They lived for some years in Washington, D.C. and had a daughter, Esther V. Webster (my aunt) born in 1872. The second husband, Edward Webster, died Feb 14, 1917, on Staten Island. I believe my grandmother, Esther Wood – Grimshaw, then Webster, died in April 1899 on Staten Island where the family had lived for some years, and Mr. Edward Webster was a miller, prior to 1900.
I had one brother, Ernest S. Grimshaw, born March 19, 1906 in North Caldwell, New Jersey, and who died June 30, 1931 in Caldwell, New Jersey at the age of 25. He never married.
There was another Grimshaw family living on Staten Island, one member of which was I believe a W. J. Grimshaw, a cousin of my father, so not doubt his father and my fathers father were brothers. I never met, or knew, any of this Grimshaw family. Some of that Grimshaw family still lived on S.I. a few years ago, so you may be able to locate some of them by checking a Staten Island telephone directory. Sorry I cannot be of much help to you.
Sincerely,
(Mrs.) Jeannette G. McEwan

My mother was quite surprised to receive you letter. She has meant to write you for ages now. But Im afraid these days she doesnt find writing to easy.
So the task has been left to me. We havent been able to find the Bible till now, but the other week I came across it. So Ive had some photo copies made for you at work.

Mr. Grimshaw,
I am writing you in regard to the tracing the genealogy of your family.
First I am the daughter (only child) of the George Grimshaw you wrote to. My father passed away June 13, 1979 at the age of 95 ½ yr.
My grandfather was James Grimshaw born July 4, 1829 at Norwich, Conn. Died Sept 25, 1903. My great grand parents were William and Mary Grimshaw born in England (dates unknown) All the Grimshaws came from England.
So you and I must be related. Id just be so happy to see you and maybe we could find out more.
Im giving you the address of one of my cousins. He works on this so much and has much more information.
George N. Grimshaw

So send him a list of the Grimshaw you have.
Your writing resembles my fathers so much.
Hope to hear from you again.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
First, let me apologize for the very long delay in answering your letter of inquiry about Dr. Grimshaw The letter was passed from one group to another and eventually reached me. Then I put your letter away while I tried to find the desired information and that took me longer than I expected.
Right now our community is working on a local history. Perhaps someone will come up with additional stories. If so I will try to get it for you.
We expect it will take about a year before our book is published.
Im sure you are aware that David and Keith Carradine are grandsons of Dr. Grimshaw – or so I am told. Their mother & Dr & Mrs. Grimshaw are buried in Waterhole Cemetery, which is south of the town of Fairview which is 35 miles west of Grimshaw.
This is copied from a report prepared by high school students in Grimshaw in 1977.
Grimshaw was named for Dr. M. E. Grimshaw, the pioneer doctor who had given unstinted service for many years to the early settlers throughout the Peace River District.
Dr. Grimshaw was born at Kingston, Ontario. In 1912 he practiced medicine at Innisfail, and in 1913 in Medicine Hat. From that point, he moved to the Peace River area and established a practice in the village of Peace River Crossing in 1914. He served on the village council for several years and held the position of reeve. He was village commissioner in 1919 when Peace River was incorporated as a town.
His colleague Dr. W. B. L. Donald was elected to the position of mayor and Dr. Grimshaw succeeded to this post after Dr. Donalds term had expired. He resigned the position in 1922.
In 1919 the Grimshaws moved to Fairview where the doctor died in November of that year. He lies at rest in the Waterhole Cemetery, near Fairview. His wife, the former Doris Fraser, survived him by many years but she too has passed away and is buried in the family plot at Waterhole. Their only daughter Doris Carradine, mother of David Carradine of Kung Fu fame, died in a tragic fire several years ago. Her ashes also rest in the family plot
The Grimshaws son, Fraser, lives in eastern Canada.
From the history of Peace River district I found this additional information which I am summarizing.
The Methodist and Presbyterian congregations joined to form the Union Church in 1917. Dr. M. Grimshaw was one of the members of the board of stewards.
Would you be interested in ordering one of our books when it is available?
Sincerely
Mrs. Iola Johnston
P.S. I have just been talking to Mrs. W. E. Moore of Peace River (She celebrated her 90th birthday June 3rd). She says she knew Mrs. Grimshaw very well. She knew them when they were in Medicine Hat also. She says she will write to you. I hope her letter will bring you more personal information than I could give you.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw:
I do not believe my family has any connection with any you show on the “family tree”.
My forefathers were United Empire Royalists from Vermont to Ontario – approximately 200 years ago. My great, great grandfather was given a land grant on Wolfe Island (Kingston, Ontario) First Cousins of mine are still farming on Wolfe Island as far as I know.
There are 2 branches of our family here in Toronto (Im sorry to say I know very few of them). An uncle of my Dads went to Rochester N.Y. and started quite a family of Grimshaws there – I think his name was Redvers Grimshaw.
Before Vermont, I understand the Grimshaws came from northern England – on the border of Scotland.
Good luck in your search –
Sincerely,
Fraser Grimshaw

Dear E. A. Grimshaw;
Thank you for taking the time and effort to write to me regarding the “Grimshaw Tree”.
I dont have a lot to add to your tree but I do know that the Grimshaws were United Empire Loyalist immigrants from Vermont and were given land grants on Wolfe Island, Kingston, Ontario. My uncle (lives in Toronto) is Fraser Grimshaw and his great grand father had 6 brothers and one or two went to Rochester, N.Y.
The enclosed 50th anniversary for Grimshaw Alberta, Canada is a town in northern Alberta named after my grand father who was the area doctor. I plan on going to Grimshaw for the celebration and may find out more about my tree then. Please keep me posted as to what you find out with your inquiry. I am curious as to how many Grimshaws you found out about and where they are located?
Sincerely,
Mike Grimshaw

Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
Please find enclosed some materials I collected in about 1972 and assembled in 1975. The Mormon Library is an excellent source of family history information. I recommend that you stop there if you are in Salt Lake City.
As you can see in these materials, the name Grimshaw started in about 1250 in Lancashire County, England. The town where the name originated (see maps) is near Blackburn. The name means “haunted grove.” Interestingly, there is also a town of Grimshaw in western Alberta, Canada, but I know nothing of how it was named.
I have also included what my father, Claude Grimshaw of Rapid City, South Dakota, knows of his family. Unfortunately, its not much because my grandfather, Walter Claude, died before my father was born, and my grandmother remarried. Most of my part of the Grimshaw family is from the Midwest, and I see no direct connection between your and my parts of the family.
Please dont hesitate to write or call (512/477-5220) if I can be of further help. I would very much appreciate any information that you acquire regarding the Grimshaw surname in your current search. Good luck.
Very truly yours,
Thomas Walter Grimshaw

My husbands paternal grandmother gave us the following information for our sons baby book. She reported that her husbands parents were both deceased when she met him and knows very little about them. But, from the information she did furnish, we do not seem to be related within four generations. However, should you turn up more information, we would be most interested in it. Good luck.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw,
I received your letter concerning the Grimshaw family tree but I am unable to be of any help because I am a widow of Russell Grimshaw.
However, I have sent your letter to my brother in law in Philadelphia, Pa. Hopefully he can fill you in on our branch of the family.
Genealogy is a very interesting subject and I have a family tree of my own but I wish I could have pursued it much further years ago.
Good luck.

Concerning your attempt to trace the genealogy of your family. At present my father who is 88 years old and in very good mind is visiting me and we discussed how far back his knowledge of the family goes. I am sorry to report that his knowledge only goes back to his grand father whose name was Edward. He died when my father was only four years old.
Good luck on your quest.

Please Note!
To the best of my knowledge. I am not familiar with any of the names on this paper. My sister, Caroline, and myself were brought up in Brooklyn in an orphanage, therefore are not too familiar with the history of our Grimshaw family. There were several relatives that lived in the Brooklyn, New York area. My fathers name was the same as mine and his sisters were Catherine and Caroline. I would suggest you consult the records in New York area, especially Brooklyn. Please keep in touch.

Dear Mr. Grimshaw:
This is in response to your letter of several months ago requesting information on my side of the Grimshaw family. I have sent your letter to my sister, Mrs. Penelope Grimshaw Shannon, 3135 Shady Dell Lane Apt 214, Melbourne, Fla 32935.
My father, John Grimshaw Jr. was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1891. He had one brother and two sisters, all four are now deceased. My father died in 1971. The Grimshaw family come from Macclesfield, England in the nineteenth century. They were involved in the silk industry. My father was a Judge in the New Jersey Superior Court. I dont remember the details of my grand parents and that is where my sister may help.
I am a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army serving in Germany as a battalion commander. That explains my delay in writing, as it is a very busy life. I joined the Army 18 years ago from West Point. My home of record is LaGrange, Tennessee.
Hopefully, Penny will be of assistance in filling in the details. Others who kept up with these things are now dead.
If I may be of further assistance, please let me know.
Sincerely,
John M. Grimshaw
