Jonathan and Betsey (Willoby) Grimshaw
Born and Lived in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio
(Note: Webpage in preparation)
Jonathan Grimshaw was apparently born in about 1773, apparently in Somerset, Pennsylvania. One record indicates, however, that he was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. Jonathan married Betsey Willoby in 1802 in Washington County, Pennsylvania or in Carroll County, Ohio. Betsey was born in 1782 in Washington County. Jonathan and Betsey subsequently lived in Beaver County (1820 Census, 1825 tax record, 1830 Census) Pennsylvania, in Carroll County and Columbiana County in eastern Ohio (1840 and 1850 Censuses). One report indicates that Jonathan died December 3, 1823 in Hillsboro, Washington County. However, he (at age 71) and Betsey are recorded living in Yellow Creek, Columbiana Township, Ohio in the 1850 U.S. Census. Betsey died in 1850.
Jonathan and Betsey had at least one child, Richard Grimshaw, who was born in 1819 (17 years after they were married?). Richard migrated to Scioto County, Ohio. There is one record that indicates that Richard may have had a brother, Benjamin, who was also in Scioto County. Richard and Nancy (Rickett) Grimshaw are the subject of a companion webpage. Two of Richard and Nancy’s children in turn migrated to Missouri from Ohio, as described on another companion webpage.
Jonathan Grimshaw is almost certainly somehow connected to the Grimshaw family line that emigrated from Yorkshire, England to northwestern Pennsylvania, near Erie, as described on another companion webpage. However, the exact nature of the connection has not yet been established.

Was Jonathan Grimshaw Related to the Erie County Line of Grimshaws?
The similarities of Jonathan and Betsey Grimshaw to the English family Jonathan and Elizabeth Grimshaw (who were not immigrants to North America themselves) is somewhat striking. However, the Jonathan Grimshaw who married Betsey was born in 1773, and the Jonathan who married Elizabeth was born in about 1790. The descendant chart for the English Jonathan Grimshaw is described on a companion webpage and is shown below.
