According to information from Beverly Scholes of Australia, John Henry Grimshaw and Elizabeth Scholes were married in Newark, NJ in April 1900. John had immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island in 1896, and Elizabeth in 1898. They were from the same area near Manchester (Ashton-under-Lyne) and may well have known each other prior to coming to the U.S. John and Elizabeth were naturalized in Newark in 1926 and 1941, respectively. They had nine children and apparently lived out their lives in the Newark area. They are buried in Kenilworth, not far from Newark.

Beverly Sholes was responsible for initiating a very informative chain of messages on the Yahoo “Grimshaw Group” site. They are shown below.
Hello list.
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Beverly Scholes from NSW Australia. My Grimshaw interest starts with John Henry Grimshaw who married my husband’s great grandfather’s daughter, Elizabeth.
I would be very interested in contacting other listers researching the same family.
John Henry GRIMSHAW, the son of George GRIMSHAW, and Ellen BATES, was born 6 FEB 1874 in Bengal Hurst, England, UK, and died 16 June 1954 in Irvington, New Jersey. He married Elizabeth SCHOLES; she was born 7 DEC 1877 in Ashton under Lyne, England, UK, and died ABT. 1950 in Irvington, New Jersey.
They married In April 1900 at Newark, New Jersey

Bev Scholes

Hi Bev,
I am researching the Grimshaw name mainly in Yorkshire England (around Wakefield, Barnsley, Doncaster & Leeds area).
I have never heard of Bengal Hurst in the UK and cannot find it anywhere. The only George Grimshaw I can find born in Jan- March quarter 1874 was born in Blackburn district of Lancashire which is about 30 miles from Ashton under Lyne. If this is the same George Grimshaw there does not appear to be any direct links with the Grimshaw’s in my research at this moment in time.
Regards,
Nick Grimshaw

Hi Nick,
Thank you for the swift reply, for looking up your records, and for trying to find a Grimshaw birth and link for me.
I am a bit in the dark myself about the family of John Henry Grimshaw. I am researching the family of Elizabeth Scholes and while researching I found a family tree posted on the Ancestry World Tree site which gave me the information on John Henry’ birth that you replied to.
Unfortunately the information posted on Ancestry was posted by an unknown person so I cannot ask them about the posting and the whereabouts of Bengal Hurst
Thank you again,
Bev

Here is a 1920 US Census sheet that has information on your John
Henry in New Jersey. Sorry the first two emails had sentences that did not quite make sense. What I sent was one sheet from the 1900 US Census, two sheets from the 1910 US Census, and this one sheet from the 1920 US Census. The 1930 US Census is just coming out and is not complete yet, there was no John Henry Grimshaw in New Jersey, yet. I also have access to most of the WFT CDs and will see if I can find anything to match what you are looking for.
I do not have any link to my line, but if you come across a Caleb Grimshaw who married Hannah Parrot 14 Oct 1790 in Leighton Buzzard, I would be interested.

Hi Bev,
On the 1881 census for Ashton under Lyne John Hy Grimshaw was living with his Grandparents, Hezekiah Bates & Martha Bates and his birth place is shown as Hurst in Lancashire (there is a Hurst in Lancashire, a suburb of Ashton under Lyne). On looking further on the 1881 census I found George & Ellen living at 50 Princess Street, Bradford, Lancashire. The odd issue here is that Bradford is actually in Yorkshire (these days -not very far from my Grimshaw’s families) but it does state on the Census form that it was then in the Parliamentary Borough of Manchester Lancashire. I don’t know if you are able to view the attached image but if you can then you will understand the situation better.
If not there here are the basics:
Name – Birth Year- Place of birth-Relation to head of family
George Grimshaw abt 1846 Manchester, Lancashire, England Head
Ellen Grimshaw abt 1847 Manchester, Lancashire, England Wife
Charlotte A. Grimshaw abt 1868 Manchester, Lancashire, England Daughter
Emma Grimshaw abt 1872 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England Daughter
Albert Grimshaw abt 1874 Manchester, Lancashire, England Son
Ellen Grimshaw abt 1876 Manchester, Lancashire, England Daughter
Mary A. Grimshaw abt 1878 Manchester, Lancashire, England Daughter
James Grimshaw abt 1880 Openshaw, Lancashire, England Son
Were Albert & John Henry twins?
Seems like you now have a few more relatives to find out about – happy searching.
Regards
Nick (Grimshaw)
Author’s note: The above family was found to be incorrect with further research.

The image of the manifest on the website is incorrect for John, but correct for Elizabeth.
Elizabeth apparently made the trip with her mother, 54-year-old Emma Scholes.
