Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw

Immigrants to the Northeastern U.S. with Descendants in Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Texas

Ann (Grunshaw) Atkinson, Oldest Child of Amos and Mary Grimshaw

The name “Grunshaw” is almost certainly derived from the original Grimshaw surname – sometimes apparently by choice of Grimshaws seeking an alternate name if they were living in an area (like Manchester and its surroundings) where Grimshaw was a very common name, and sometimes by errors in documents such as passenger lists.

Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw wee married in 1820 and immigrated from Lancashire to the U.S., apparently arriving in Rhode Island in about 1826. It appears that they had at least four children – Ann, Elizabeth, George and James. The first three were born in England, and James was born in Connecticut after the family arrived in the U.S. Amos Grimshaw died in Massachusetts in about 1830, and Mary apparently remarried, to William Hargreaves, in 1831.

Three members of this family who migrated to Ironton, Wisconsin – Ann, Elizabeth, and Henry – and their descendants. Henry Grimshaw apparently was the son of George Grimshaw, the third child of Amos and Mary. Daughter Ann married John Atkinson; this family moved on to Greenwood, Nebraska after living in Ironton. Elizabeth married James Markham in Massachusetts, who disappeared, and then moved to Ironton (perhaps to join Ann and John Atkinson), where she met and married John Jessop. This family remained in Ironton for the remainder of their lives, as did Henry Grunshaw.

George Grimshaw, a descendant of the “Texas” line of Grimshaws (see companion webpage), has developed an intriguing hypothesis (generally accepted in this webpage) that his line is connected to the Grunshaw line. Based on George’s analysis, the youngest son of Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw/Grimshaw. James, was more than likely the James that migrated to Texas and became the progenitor of the “Texas” line.

Descendant Charts of Henry, Ann and Amos Grunshaw from Bob Warren

Bob Warren sent e-mails in July 2005 that provide a good deal of additional Grunshaw information, including summary descendant charts for Henry, Ann and Amos Grunshaw. These e-mails are shown below.

Mr. Grimshaw;

I was wondering if you have come across the Grunshaw name in your research. My line is Grunshaw from Lancashire area. My relatives settled in Wisconsin after first being in Rhode Island. My Great Grandfather Henry Grunshaws obit said he was born 1845 in Pawtucket R.I. the son of Amos Grunshaw and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw. Buried in the same cemetery in Ironton, Wisconsin is Ann (Grunshaw) Atkinson born 1812 also from Lancashire and Elizabeth (Grunshaw), (Markham) Jessop born 1821 in Blackburn, England. I have never been able to find Amos & Mary Grunshaw, nor the relationship of the two girls to My GGreat grandfather Henry. There are so very very few Grunshaws in the US, and to have three here in a village of 800 and not be related would be odd. It has been suggested to me several times that indeed, they may have been GRIMSHAW, but I have not found a clue to suggest that. This is why I write to you.

Thank you for taking the time to receive this note. I will be very happy to listen to any suggestion you may have.

Thomas;

I assume you would prefer e-mailed copies of my Grunshaw data, however hard copies are no problem either. I have three lines of Grunshaws that are possibly connected by a surname and location of settlement in America, but I cant find the thread that makes them the same family of Grunshaws. I will send three descendant outlines, two very short, the third, my family line, a little longer.

Then I shall include a family report on each, which will indicate the possibility of connection.

How does that sound?

I have not received the Grimshaw data yet.

In this line an adopted child, Ella Atkinsion, would seem to be connected with the Ann Grunshaw line of Atkinson’s. Elizabeth and her 2nd husband John Jessop share cemetery plot with some Markham’s from first marraige. Plot is located 30 yards from Henry Grunshaw’s plot. There is a thin thread connecting the 3 lines, but I can’t verify it yet.

Was James Grimshaw Descended from Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grimshaw/Grunshaw?

George Grimshaw prepared the following piece (apparently in 2007) hypothesizing that James Grimshaw, progenitor of the “Texas” Line of Grimshaws, was descended from Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw.

A Possible Link of Our James Grimshaw to an Amos and Mary Grimshaw

Thad Grimshaw found the following message on GENFORUM.

“Mary Greenwood married Amos Grunshaw in the Lancashire area about 1820.We think they had two daughters Ann and Elizabeth. Ann’s obit says that Amos and Mary came to America and settled in Rhode Island. Ann Married John Atkinson in 1831 at Taunton, Massachusetts. John was also from Lancashire. John and Ann later came to Wisconsin where they settled and died. I have a Great Grand Father Henry Grunshaw born 1845 in Pawtucket, Bristol, Rhode Island. I don’t know where or how he fits with Amos and Mary. He is buried just a few lots away from Ann (Grunshaw) Atkinson. Nothing is known about the Grunshaw’s or Greenwoods.”

Interestingly, it is possible that the Amos and Mary mentioned here could be our ancestor James Grimshaws parents.

  1. “Greenwood” is the middle name James and Lydia Grimshaw gave their only son Frank. This is currently the only known possible family connection for this name.

2) “Mary” is the name listed as James mother on his Record of Marriage to Lydia.

3) Mary is the name that James and his second wife Sarah gave there oldest daughter.

4) “Amos” is the name that James and his second wife Sarah gave there oldest son.

5) “Annie Elizabeth” is the name James and Sarah gave their second daughter.

6) The date and place that Amos Grunshaw and Mary Greenwood were married fits well with what little we know of James parents.

7) 1870, 1880, and 1900 Census information shows James parents as being born in England.

What doesnt seem to fit from the GENFORUM message above.

  1. The name “Grunshaw.” Although, this could be explained as a misspelling, a variation in spelling, or the name could have been changed to “Grimshaw.”

2) The only record we have that mentions the name of James parents is his Record of Marriage to Lydia. There the name William is listed as his fathers name. It is possible that William could have been Marys second husband, and therefore James step dad.

3) There was no mention of James parents or whether he had any siblings other than possibly a brother named George in the family history passed down through James son Amos or through any of Amos children. According to George Olan Grimshaw, his father, Amos, told him he was named after his Uncle George who was named after his Uncle George.

4) We have no family history or record of our ancestor James being in Rhode Island, although we have records that he lived and worked in New Bedford, Massachusetts which is about 30 miles away from Providence, Rhode Island. So it is possible he could have lived there growing up.

These items are addressed below:

  1. The name “Grunshaw.” This could be a misspelling, a variation in spelling, or the name could have been changed to “Grimshaw.” This item is self explanatory, and can also be explained along with item 2 below.

2) The only record we have that mentions the name of James parents is his Record of Marriage to Lydia. There the name William is listed as his fathers name.

This item can be explained as follows:

Thad Grimshaw found the following information at genealogy.com , that was verified by George H. Grimshaw.

A Mary Grimshaw married a William Hargraves in Taunton, Massachusetts on June 4, 1831. And in 1833, James Hargraves Grimshaw son of Amos & Mary Grimshaw was baptized in 1833 in Lowell, Massachusetts.

Family history indicates and census and military records support that James was born on July 4, 1829. While according to family history, James came to America from England as a young man and settled in Massachusetts, James Record of Marriage lists Norwich, Connecticut as his birthplace. James son, Franks death certificate lists James birthplace as Windsor Connecticut. The 1870 Falls County Census, the 1880 Bell County Census, and the 1900 Falls County Census lists Connecticut as James birthplace and his parents birthplace as England.

It is possible that Amos and Mary could have moved from Rhode Island to Connecticut where James was born and then to Massachusetts, where Amos died when James was an infant. Mary then married William Hargraves, in Massachusetts in 1831 and a couple of years later in 1833 James was baptized as a toddler. He would have known William as his father, perhaps explaining why he listed William as his fathers name on his Record of Marriage to Lydia.

3) There was no mention of James parents or whether he had any siblings, other than possibly a brother named George in the family history passed down through James son Amos or through any of Amos children. According to George Olan Grimshaw, his father, Amos, told him he was named after his Uncle George who was named after his Uncle George.

The issue of James parents was previously mentioned in item 2.

The issue of whether James had any siblings only means that none were mentioned, not that there werent any, as strange as that may seem. It may be that James had a falling out with his family and didnt want anything to do with them. Also, as Thad Grimshaw has indicated, there may have been break in communications with James’ siblings when he joined the confederate army. Who knows? It is certainly possible that he had siblings. As mentioned at the beginning Amos and Mary had two daughters Ann and Elizabeth. They also may have had a grandson named Henry, indicating that they had a son.

The 1850 Providence Rhode Island Census lists Mary Hargraves, age 59, born in England; along with George Grimshaw, age 34, born in England; James E. Grimshaw, age 21, born in Connecticut; William Barnfore(?), 23, born in England; and Henry Grimshaw, age 6, born in Massachusetts; as residents of Providence Rhode Island. They are listed along with five other families as living in the same dwelling (#226). George, James, and William are all listed as machinists. This information fits very well with what we know and have heard about our ancestor, James Grimshaw.

If Mary Hargraves is the same Mary Grimshaw who married William Hargaves in Lowell, Massachusetts, the 1850 Providence Rhode Island Census information indicates that William may have died before or after the family moved to Providence. On the Census above, dated 8/24/1850, James’ age is listed as 21. This indicates that his 21st birthday was sometime before this date. This is consistent with our ancestor James’ birth date of July 4, 1829, as recorded in James and Lydia’s Family Bible and passed down through James’ son, Amos and his son, George Olan Grimshaw. On the Census above, “Conn.” This is consistent with information previously mentioned.

The George Grimshaw that appears on the Census above fits with the family history that James son George Monroe Grimshaw, was named after his Uncle George. Thad also found a record of a George Grimshaw who worked at the New England Screw Company, Providence, RI as a machinist in 1860. Thad also found a record of a Charles Grimshaw son of George and Ann Grimshaw was born on 04-25-1844 in Providence.

On the Census above, James’ occupation is listed as machinist. His occupation is also listed as machinist on he and Lydias Record of Marriage dated 10/7/1851. This is also consistent with other Census Records as well as information passed down through our ancestor James, his son Amos, and his son George Olan Grimshaw. The James listed on the Census above has the middle initial “E.” There was never any mention of our ancestor, James having a middle name or initial, nor do any other records we have show a middle name or initial.

Also of interest, is Henry Grimshaw listed as 6 years old on the above Census. He could very well be the Henry Grunshaw born in 1845 in Pawtucket, Bristol, Rhode Island and later moved to Wisconsin. The age is consistent. He also could be the son of the George Grimshaw listed on the Census. Perhaps he is the Charles Grimshaw mentioned above or his younger brother. Or, he could be the son of another brother, who is unknown at this time.

4) We have no family history or record of our ancestor James being in Rhode Island, although we have records that he lived and worked in New Bedford, Massachusetts which is about 30 miles away from Providence, Rhode Island. So it is possible he could have worked there as a young man.

This item is self explanatory and can be supported by information previously presented.

Back to Mary Hargraves. A Mary Hargraves age 68 and born in England is also listed in the August 1860 Providence RI Census living in the household of a young couple with the last name “Tillinghast”.

A Mary Hargraves age 68, widow, is listed in a Rhode Island Death Record. She died on August 24, 1860. A Thomas Greenwood is listed as next of kin. There is a possibility of our ancestor James being linked to Providence RI, as George Noel Grimshaw found out that Lydia Grimshaw, James first wifes youngest child with her first husband George Allen was born in Providence. James may have met Lydia in Providence before moving to New Bedford. If we can find the fate of George Allen, we could determine the length of time between his fate and James and Lydia being married. Donna Slicer, a descendant of James and Lydia Grimshaw does not know what happened to him.

We have a lot of coincidental information that would suggest that Amos and Mary Grimshaw (or Grunshaw) could be the parents of our ancestor James. The question is, is it enough information that we should we call it a match? In addition, Tom Grimshaw has posted information titled “Grunshaw Family Lines in America” on the “Grimshaw Origins and History” which he received from Bob Warren. He has a an Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw from England with possibly two daughters named Ann and Elizabeth who immigrated to the U.S from England about 1827. They lived in Rhode Island as well as Taunton, Massachustts.

Elizabeth and her husband John Markham were married in Falls River, Masachusetts. Ann and her husband John Atkinson and later Ann and her children all eventually settled in Ironton, Wisconsin, as did Bobs ancestor Henry Grumshaw, who was born on Apr 25, 1845 in Pawtucket, Bristol, Rhode Island. Considering all of the previous information and that Grunshaw and Grimshaw could be a spelling variation on the same name, and that our James Grimshaw and his first wife, Lydia named gave their son Frank the middle name “Greenwood,” and that he and his second wife Sarah, named four of their five their children, Mary, Amos, Annie Elizabeth, and George, we have a possibility of a match. The information on our family has also been posted as “The Texas Line of Grimshaws” by Tom Grimshaw on the “Grimshaw Origins and History” website. If all of the information above referred to the same family here is how the story might go: Amos Grunshaw was born about 1795 in Lancashire, England. He married Mary Greenwood in 1820. She is thought to be born about 1799 in England.1, 2 On May 1, 1821, Mary gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth.1 In 1827 Amos, Mary and Elizabeth, and possibly Ann Grunshaw, born in July 1812, in Lancashire, England, and George Grunshaw born in England in1816 immigrated to the U.S.1, 2

Ann and Georges relation, if any, to Amos and Mary is unknown at this time.1, 2 If Amos was considerably older than Mary, they could be his children from a previous marriage. If not, they could his younger sister and brother, or his niece and nephew. However if Mary Greenwood Grunshaw is the Mary Hargraves listed in the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census in Providence Rhode Island, at age 59 and 68 respectively, she would have been born about 1791-1792. 1, 2, 3 If both she and Amos were born about the same time, they would have been about 20 years old when Ann Grunshaw was born and therefore old enough to be her parents, which seems probable.1, 2 This would have also made them old enough to be Georges parents as well.1, 2

While it is unsure which port on the northeast coast of the U.S. they arrived at, it is thought that they may have initially settled in Rhode Island, as they were known to live there.1 If James Grimshaw is indeed their son, they would have soon relocated to Norwich, Connecticut, where on July 4, 1829, James was born.2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Amos and Mary may have then relocated their family to Taunton, Massachusetts, where Amos died about 1830 (although he may have died before the family moved to Tauton.)11 Mary then met William Hargraves and they were married in Taunton on June 4, 1831.12 Ann Grunshaw met John Atkinson (they may have known each other in England and immigrated to the U.S. at the same time) and they were married in Taunton on September 11, 1831.1 The Hargraves and the Atkinsons may have then relocated to Lowell, Massachusetts, as in 1833, James Hargraves Grimshaw, son of Amos and Mary Grimshaw was baptized at St. Annes, Episcopal church in Lowell, Massachusetts.13 Also On November 29, 1834, John and Ann (Grunshaw) Atkinsons first child, John Atkinson Jr. was born in Massachusetts.1 The Atkinsons and the Hargraves may have then relocated to Rhode Island, as John and Anns second child, Elizabeth Ann Atkinson, was born on Jun 10, 1836 in Rhode Island as was their third child, Nelson, who was born on June 20, 1841 and their fourth child, Samuel Atkinson, who was born in 1846.1 Some time after this, John and Ann Atkinson relocated their family to Ironton, Wisconsin.1 Also during this time, Elizabeth Grunshaw met James Markham and they were married on Feb 17, 1838 in Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts. They had two girls Mary and Sarah and two boys – John, who was born in Rhode Island in 1846, indicating that they lived close by the Hargraves and the Atkinsons at that time, and William born on March 26, 1849.1 They may have then moved back to Fall River as James left there on a trip to Chicago, and was never heard from again. He is believed to have died in 1857. Elizabeth stayed on in Fall River saving up her money. She then relocated to Wisconsin in 1862 and settled in the Ironton area where John and Ann (Gruneshaw) Atkinson lived.1 During this time George may have also married and had a son named Henry Grunshaw, who was born on Apr 25, 1845 in Pawtucket , Bristol, Rhode Island.1, 2 Prior to 1850, William Hargraves had died or he and Mary were divorced as he does not appear with Mary, George, James or Henry on the 1850 Census in Providence, Rhode Island, recorded on August 21, 1850. 2, 11. A lot of good information supporting Amosand Mary (Green wood) Grunshaw, William and Mary Grunshaw Hargraves, and George, James and Henry Grunshaw all belonging to the same family can be found here. As mentioned earlier, Mary is listed as being 59 years old at the time, and born in England, indicating she was born about 1791, making her the right age and nationality to be Ann, Elizabeth, George, and James mother.2 Mary is the name listed on James and Lydia Grimshaws record of marriage.6 George is listed as being 34 years old and born in England. His occupation is listed a “machinist.” He fits into the picture as James Grimshaw, claimed to have a brother named George.4 James is listed as 21 years old and born in Connecticut. His occupation is listed a “machinist.” All of this information fits with what we know about our relative, James Grimshaw, except that the James listed on this census has the middle initial “E” after his name, which may or may not be an error. Henry is listed as being 6 years old and born in Massachusetts, which fits well with the information provided by Bob Warren and posted on the Grimshaw Origins and History web site.1

Mary Hargraves is also listed on the 1850 Census in Providence, Rhode Island, recorded in August, 1860. Her age is listed as 68 years and she was living in the household of a young couple with the last name “Tillinghast”.3

A Mary Hargraves died in Rhode Island on August 24, 1860. She was 68 years old, placing her birth year about 1791 -1792. It shows that she was widowed and perhaps divorced and lists her kin as “Thomas Greenwood” and “- Bagnall.” This may indicate a match as well since Amos Grunshaw married Mary Greenwood in England. Thomas may have been Marys brother or perhaps even her husband. Also our relative James Grimshaw and his wife Lydia, named their first child Frank Greenwood Grimshaw, which seems to indicate a link with the Greenwood family.4

Photos of Henry Grunshaw Descendants and Their Families

Bob Warren has provided excellent photos of descendants of Henry and Mary (Greenhalgh) Grunshaw, which are provided below. Henry is believed to be the son of George Grunshaw and the grandson of Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw.

Photos of Family Farms in Wisconsin

Bob Warren, in an e-mail of June 8, 2008, stated the following:

“The farms were located side by side with a town road running between them in Section 8 of the Township of Ironton, Sauk County, Wisconsin. This was located about 3 miles from and halfway between the villages of Ironton and Cazenovia.”

On June 7, 2008:

My parents owned and lived on the Francis Grunshaw farm. When we lived there the year 1911 was painted on the front of the barn in white numbers and I dont see the year in the photo. I lived there from birth until my 18th birthday when the folks moved to Reedsburg, WI to live and work.”

Grimshaw Families in Southwest Wisconsin

Coincidentally, at least four separate Grimshaw family lines immigrated to the same general area in, Wisconsin. These family locations are shown in the map below. The Ironton Grimshaws (Grunshaws) are described on this webpage. The Elroy Grimshaw families are described on the Henry and Mary (Mann) webpage (see companion webpage). The Oakdale & Camp Douglas Grimshaws are descended from George and Charlotte (Menard) and are described on a two companion webpages (webpage 1 and webpage 2). George Grimshaw is also apparently buried at Oakdale. The Richland Center Grimshaws are also descended from George and Charlotte (Menard) Grimshaw and are described on a companionwebpage.

How Did Grimshaw Get Modified to “Grunshaw”?

As noted, some Grunshaws came by the name because of errors of transcription of records, such as passenger lists. In addition, some Grimshaws may have changed their name in order to distinguish themselves because of the common occurrence of the name in some areas in Lancashire, such as Manchester. The latter occurrence was documented by Higson in an 1859 publication1 on Droylsden, which is near Manchester:

Several old families [near Droylsden] bore the name of Grimshaw, and in order to distinguish them, one is said to have varied the form to Grunshaw, or Grunsho.

An image of this quote from Higson’s book is shown below.

Details of Amos and Mary Grimshaw’s Descendants

In addition to providing the summary descendant charts described above for Amos, Ann and Henry Grimshaw, Bob Warren provided rich detailed descendant information, which is presented below.

Amos and Mary Grimshaw — and Their Daughter, Elizabeth Grimshaw

Generation No. 1

1. Amos1 Grunshaw1 was born Abt. 1795 in Lancashire, England, and died Unknown in Massachusetts. He married (2) Mary Greenwood1 1820. She was born 1799 in England, and died Unknown.

Notes for Amos Grunshaw:

We believe that Amos and Mary came to America some time around 1826. They probably settled in the State of Rhode Island and they may have also gone to Massachusetts. What happened to them after that is still unknown after much seaching, but perhaps they stayed in that area and died there. It appears that some of the children came to the State of Wisconsin next.

JOHN JESSOP, farmer, Sec. 3 ; P. O Ironton ; son of John and Mary (Saville) Jessop ; was born in Brairley, Yorkshire, England, the last Tuesday in July, 1820 ; came to America, arriving in New;

York May 2, 1849, and in Sauk Co. May 17, same year; settled on Sec. 3, Town 12 north, Range 3 east, now Ironton ; helped to organize the town of Marston, of which the present town of Ironton then formed a part. Mr. Jessop was married Oct. 22, 1862; in Ironton, to Mrs. Betsey Markham, daughter of Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw; Mrs. Jessop was born in Lancashire, England; came to the United States in 1827. Was married February, 1838, at Fall River, Mass., to James Markham ; they had six children-Mary, deceased; Sarah, now Mrs. R; R. Gatley; John, married to Elizabeth All, and living in Dakota ; in 1855, Mr. Markham went to Chicago on business, and has never been heard from since by his family ; Mrs. JMarkham took care of her children, and saved a few hundred dollars, with which she came to Wisconsin in 1862. Mr. John Jessop was one of the very earliest settlers in Ironton ; a couple of hunters were his only neighbors within the limits of the present town of Ironton the first year of his residence here ; he has 140 acres of land ; they have two adopted children-John J. Cludeary and Ella Atkinson.

+ 2 i. Elizabeth2 Grunshaw, born May 01, 1821 in Blackburn, England; died Apr 08, 1894 in buried in Ironton, Wisconsin Evergreen Cemetary.

Generation No. 2

2. Elizabeth2 Grunshaw (Amos1) 2,3 was born May 01, 1821 in Blackburn, England, and died Apr 08, 1894 in buried in Ironton, Wisconsin Evergreen Cemetary. She married (1) James Markham Feb 17, 1838 in Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts, son of unknown Markham. He died 1857. She married (2) John Jessop Jr Oct 22, 1862 in Ironton, Sauk, Wisconsin, son of John Sr and Mary Saville. He was born Jul 29, 1821 in Brairley, Yorkshire, England, and died Jun 05, 1901 in buried in Ironton, Wisconsin Evergreen Cemetery.

Notes for Elizabeth Grunshaw:

  • Note; Elizabeth Grunshaw has not been verified as being a relative of Henry Grunshaw. I have placed her here to keep her in my searches. I find it strange that three Grunshaws (Henry, Ann and Elizabeth ) came to the small village of less than 100 people, Ironton, Wisconsin, and not be related in some way.

In a book of Biographies of Sauk County on page 775 under biography of John Jessop it states that John Jessop married Mrs Betsy Markham daughter of Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw, and that she was born in Lancashire, England.

Elizabeth arrived in the U.S. in 1827, which would make her about 6 yrs old. She married twice, First to James Markham in 1838, in Fall River Mass. He left there on a trip to Chicago, and was never heard from again. Elizabeth stayed on in Fall River saving up her money. She then came to Wisconsin in 1862 and settled in the Ironton area. She then met and married John Jessop in 1862. It is listed that she had six children with Mr Markham, but I have only found names of three so far.. The two children listed with John Jessop are adopted. It is interesting that the girl is listed as an Atkinson because John Atkinson and a Ann Grunshaw came to Ironton from England. The Atkinsons went to Nebraska where he died, and she returned to Ironton for a time, but I suspect she may have returned to Nebraska. Also interesting that my Grandfather, Hubert Bingham came from Valentine, Nebraska, and married Henry Grunshaw’s daughter.

Elizabeth (Grunshaw) Jessops’ parents were Amos and Mary (Greenwood) Grunshaw according to cemetery records.

Her maiden name was Grunshaw She was born May 1, 1821, at B Blackburn, England. At the age of six years’ her parents brought her to Massachusetts But nearly two-thirds of her life was spent in Sauk county She was married in 1837 to Mr Markham who died in 1857. In 1862 she married

John Jessops, who survives her suddenly and sadly bereft in his 74th year. She leaves also two sons and one daughter and a large circle of friends and neighbors

The funeral was well attended notwithstanding. the deep mud and gloomy weather. One of the old settlers of Sauk County, all her neighbors will sadly miss her, as they linger on the shores of time. ROBERT Smith

Notes for John Jessop Jr:

John and his brother Joseph arrived in Ironton, Wisconsin. He settled on Sec. 3, Town 12 north, Range 3 east, now Ironton. He helped organize the Town of Marston, of which the current Town of Ironton was a part. He had 140 acres and a couple of hunters as his only neighbors.

We believe that John was married before he came to Wisconsin and by that marriage had a daughter Melissa. John Jessop also brought 5 year old John Jessop Cluderay to America, and either adopted him or raised him as his and Elizabeth’s own. John Arrived in New York on May 2, 1849 and came to Ironton May 17 ,1849. In 1900 census, John is listed as living with W. Markham his stepson. This would be a son from Elizabeths first marriage.

IRONTON EARLY SETTLEMENT

The town of Ironton, one of the most romantic spots in the state of Wisconsin, a spot where romance and love itself have become traditional, lying squarely west of the town of Reedsburg, has a story truly historical. The territory within the present confines of the town originally formed a, part of Marston, and was organized under that name about 1852. The town of Marston was divided at a later date, and the towns of LaValle, Woodland, Ironton and Washington were organized.

The first man to settle in the town was William Cochran, a married man, who brought his family hither in 1846. He built a shanty some little distance south of the site of the village of Ironton. The death of his wife, in April, 1850, was the first fatality within the town. Mr Cochran was a sportsman, by instinct, and spent most of his time hunting rather than in improving his claim.

Possibly the next settlers of the town were the Jessop brothers, Joseph and John, who came in May, 1849. They were natives of Brairley, Yorkshire, England, sons of John and Mary (Saville) Jessop, and came to the United States in 1849, and came directly to Ironton. The birth that summer of Elizabeth Jessop, to Joseph Jessop and wife Ann, was the first in town.

Their grave site at Resting Green Cemetery east of the Ironton village, is located just east of the west entrance , on the lower area about 35-40 yards in. Charles, Elizabeth and Flora are there.

From 1851 on the settlement of Ironton was very rapid, and within a few years the whole community was settled. William All. Abram Stansfield and Charles H. Sands came in 1853.

Charles H. Sands, remembered as a prominent farmer of the early days, was a native of Benton, Yates Co., N. Subject: Re: Lydia and Francis Price.

Lydia died of pneumonia following typhoid in 1886, and the family got split up. Elcina Atkinson got married very young, and took her brother Nelt in, and Sylvester, Orin , Roy and Eva were sent to live with Marion Price’s brother Nelt’s wife Lany Price in Baraboo, WI and Nelt (William Nelson Price) and Marion went to Nebraska near Bordeaux to homestead in the big land give away. The two youngest little girls were split from the rest of the family Lydia Etta Price (Etta) was given to Marion’s half sister Mary Jeanette Price who was married to Abner Stanbery, a minister in Sauk Co, WI. Myrtle Mae Price was given to the next door neighbors of Lydia and Marion at the time of her death. Lon Jackson and his wife had lost their only two children in the same typhoid epidemic that took Lydia Dyson

Price. They moved to Black River Falls, Wisconsin and raised Mae. I think

she even

went by the last name of Jackson.

Still a sad story, though. Even after Marion

retrieved the kids, they had a tough life. Stories

about having to hide under the floorboards of

the shanty to escape the Indians and all kinds

of deprivation. Then Jan 28, 1897 Marion and

one of the boys were out chopping down a tree

for firewood near Hay Springs, NE and the tree

fell on him and severed his leg. Bled to death

in front of his little boy. Bum deal. My grandfather

took the kids out west to Colorado to again be

near their Uncle Nelt and Aunt Lany before 1900. They

sent for Lany and both families of kids.

Notes for Henry Grunshaw:

* Note; Henry Grunshaw has not been verified as being a relative of Ann Grunshaw nor Elizabeth Grunshaw. But they are listed separatley and they are all in my searches. I find it strange that three Grunshaws came to the small village of less than 100 people, Ironton, Wisconsin, and not be related in some way.

Henry was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on April 24, 1845 He fought in the war and was a fellow of the G.A.R.

Notes for Mary Greenhalgh:

After Mary’s sister Ellen died, Mary took her daughter Iva Sands in and carred for her until she left for California.

Mary made a “Wedding Ring quilt ” for Iva Sands, and a patch quilt for Carrie Pearson and Mary Agnes Warren. Reportedly she made very beautiful quilts.

Mary Grunshaw fell and broke her hip and was bed ridden until her death. My grandfather and Grandmother Hubert and Fannie Bingham took care of her, as there homes were next door to each other. I can recall visiting on a Sunday and hearing Mary cry out as Hubert moved her into another position on the bed. The pain of a broken hip destroyed her will to live.

Notes for Hubert Wesley Bingham:

Hubert Bingham had a farm in the town of Ironton, in the area called Carr Valley on county G between Lime Ridge and Ironton. He later sold this farm to his daughter and husband Kenneth and Hazel (Bingham) Warren. At this time Hubert And Fannie retired to a house next door to Fannie’s mother and father Henry and Mary Grunshaw. This was on main street (also state highway 58) in the village of Ironton, just north of the Methodist Church on the west side of the street.

Hubert grew up in the Richland Center, Wisconsin, area. He appears to have spent some time in Nebraska , perhaps at the home of his Aunt Ida Stambaugh As a child, I recall Grandpa (Hubert) telling me about how he had met and talked with Wild Bill Hickock, and how he used to have a holster and gun like Wild Bill. I really didn’t believe him then, now I see how it certainly was very possible.

We have photos of the Harry Leonard family who lived in “Upper Carr Valley” , Hubert’s aunt Harriet Bingham married Nathan Leonard, and Harry Leonard was no doubt their son, as he and Hubert were first cousins, according to a photo I have seen of Harry Leonard.

340 HISTORY OF REEDSBURG SETTLERS IN CARR VALLEY

So far as is known Mr. Carr was the first settler in this region, and the community takes its name from this circumstance. Mr. Carr came about 1850, and lived in what is known as Upper Carr Valley, but may have owned some land in Lower Carr Valley also. He settled on the W. E. Bible farm. Possibly the next settler to come was Ira Allen, locating on the farm now known as the Charles Benson farm. His wife was Rebecca Bliss, and they had previously resided in Sheboygan County. Mrs. Mary Bible, Reedsburg, is his daughter.

Among the other settlers in this valley were: J. Doyle, on the John Doyle farm; James Frank, on the D. Andrews farm; a Mr. Bennett, where Peter Vosen Jr., now lives; Mr. St. John, on the Bradie Smith property; John Osborne, on the Eugene Gasser farm; Mr. Mackintyre, where John Burgess now lives; Owen Manville, on the Thos. Manville place; Patrick McDonald, on the Hubert Bingham farm; C. Collins, on the Jabez Marshall farm; K Small, on the Frank Gasser farm; Mr. Davis, where the Ora Schluter family reside; then there was Andrew Hillestad on the Daniel Webb place; Nelson. Osborne, where Peter Vosen Sr., resides, and William Griffin, on the Abraham Griffin farm.

After their marriage, Kenneth And Hazel moved onto the farm formerly owned by Hazels father, Hubert Bingham. This farm was the second farm on the right going south on County G from state road 58 in Sauk County. Henry and Mary Grunshaw farmed on the next farm to the north. They farmed here until about l945 when they moved to Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Ken then worked for Bernien implement where his main job was assembling new farm equipment. After several years his desire to farm again took over and he bought the “Pawlish” farm south of Reedsburg. During this time Hazels health was not good, and they returned to Reedsburg where Ken became a carpenters helper, and did a lot of remodeling work on his own. It was at this time that he built a new home on west main street in Reedsburg. Once again he wanted to farm, so bought a farm east of Reedsburg and stayed there until the early sixties, and once again moved back to Reedsburg. They lived on west main right across the street from the new house he had previously built, in a home that his in laws,Hubert and Fannie Bingham had lived in. This was to be his retirement home.
