George and Charlotte (Menard) Grimshaw

Married near Montreal in 1817 and Raised Their Family on Wolfe Island

George Grimshaw was apparently born in New Hampshire in about 1794, most likely the son of William and Elizabeth (Lepninah orZephaniah) Grimshaw. He and Charlotte Menard, a French Canadian, were married at St. Luc, Quebec on September 9, 1817. Sometime later they settled on Wolfe Island, Ontario at the head of the St. Lawrence River, where they owned land on the northern shore of the island. George and Charlotte had several children while on the island. Charlotte apparently died before George moved away from the island, but her grave has not yet been located. George and his children left Wolfe Island, and at least three of his sons moved to Wisconsin. After living for a time in New York, and possibly Pennsylvania, George also moved to Wisconsin and apparently died there.

George and Charlotte’s descendants comprise one of the largest branches of the Grimshaw family in North America. The author of this website is in their family line. Terry (Grimshaw) Micks has conducted extensive research on George and Charlotte’s descendants, which is summarized on a companion webpage. Barbara Bonner has also researched this line (and collateral Grimshaw descendant lines of William and Elizabeth Grimshaw), which is presented on another companion webpage.

Marriage Record and George’s Baptism Record

George and Charlotte were married in St. Luc, which is a few miles southeast of Montreal. Calvin Lamb has located the records of George and Charlotte’s marriage certificate and George’s certificate of baptism. The marriage of George and Charlotte was recorded in French at St. Luc Catholic Church. Calvin Lamb has located the record and translated it as shown below (in French and then in English.)  An image of the original record is shown below.

Apparently George was baptized on the same day of his marriage to  Charlotte, perhaps as a precondition to being married in the Catholic church in St. Luc. Calvin Lamb has found the record and translated it as shown below, again in French and then English. Author’s note: It has been pointed out by Barbara Bonner that close examination of these two records shows that Elizabeth’s last name is more likely to be Zephaniah than Lepninah, as interpreted by Calvin Lamb. Both records indicate a spelling of “Zepniaah,” which is probably the best that a French-speaking clerk could do with the name “Zephaniah.” This interpretation would also be consistent with the first name of their likely oldest son, Zephaniah (see companion webpage on William and Elizabeth Grimshaw’s life in New Hampshire.)

Location and Photos of Land Owned by George and Charlotte on Wolfe Island

Barbara Bonner has found records of land ownership on Wolfe Island by George and Charlotte. These records have been plotted on the “Meacham Map1,” which is shown on a companion webpage (on George’s presumed nephew, William Grimshaw) in three parts. The easternmost segment, which shows the parcel owned by George and Charlotte is shown in Figure 5 below. The parcel apparently owned by George and Charlotte is indicated by an arrow in the image below.

A Google Earth image of the area on Wolfe Island where George and Charlotte had their land is shown below. Their plot would have been southwest of the white area just offshore of the island.

Barbara Bonner briefly visited the parcel of land indicated in the map in the summer of 2000 and took a few photos. Two of these photos are shown below.

Note the body of water barely visible to the left of the large tree, on the left side of the photo. This body of water is the headwaters of the St. Lawrence River. Thanks to Barbara Bonner for providing this photo.

1880 U.S. Census Record Showing George Grimshaw Record

The 1880 U.S. Census includes a record showing George Grimshaw living with Robert and Alice Smith and their children in Oak Dale, Monroe County, Wisconsin as shown in a companion webpage. This record is reproduced below. It indicates that George is a widowed grandfather, age 100, who was born in New Hampshire. Terry (Grimshaw) Micks deserves credit for originally finding this record and understanding its significance, as described below.

The original census record has been obtained from microfilm and scanned; the resulting images are shown below in the figure below. Note that George is shown as “Grandfather-in-law” rather than Grandfather. The ages of the children indicate that Alice cannot be their mother, so the children were apparently born to a prior marriage of Robert Smith. Thus it seems likely that George was the father of Robert’s previous wife (mother of the children,) who is unknown at this time.

Since George was born in about 1794, his age was probably 86, rather than the 100 shown in the record.

Image of original 1880 U. S. Census record, showing George Grimshaw (on line 7) as “Grandfather-in-law.”

An image of the right-hand side of the record for George is shown below. Note in line 7 that George’s birthplace is shown (faintly) as New Hampshire. Both his parents are shown as having been born in England. The indicated birthplace of George in New Hampshire is the best evidence currently available of his being descended from William and Elizabeth (Lepninah) Grimshaw, the only Grimshaws apparently living in that state during that timeframe. Note also that both of William’s parents are indicated as having been born in England.

Image of the same record as in Figure 7, showing George Grimshaw’s birthplace (line 7) as being in New Hampshire.

Final Resting Places of George and Charlotte Grimshaw

It is not known at this time where Charlotte (Menard) Grimshaw is buried, but it seems likely that she was interred in Canada. George apparently migrated with his sons to Wisconsin, probably after the passing of his wife. It is believed by descendants of George and Charlotte who are conducting family history research, particularly Terry (Grimshaw) Micks, that George is buried in the Oakdale, Wisconsin cemetery with two of his sons, Alexander Eli Grimshaw and Eli George Grimshaw. A photo of the probable burial site is shown below. The graveyard sign is also shown below.

Likely burial location of George Grimshaw. The plot extends from behind the bush on the left to the longer horizontal stone on the right. The grave marker of Alexander Eli Grimshaw, one of George’s sons, is the gray one to the left of the evergreen tree (the gravestone has a heavy growth of lichens at the top and the base). The graves of George Grimshaw and Eli George Grimshaw, another son, are apparently at this location but are unmarked.

Sign at the Oakdale Cemetery, Oakdale, Wisconsin. The grave marker of Alexander Eli Grimshaw can be seen below the “M” in the word “cemetery”. George is probably located somewhere to the right of Alexander’s grave marker.

Ancestor Information for Charlotte Menard from Madeleine Menard

Madeleine Menard has conducted extensive research on the family history of the Menards from whom Charlotte Menard is descended and has posted the results on a website with the following address

http://groups.msn.com/genealogiemenardditlafontaine/home

Summary ancestor information for Charlotte has been extracted and is provided below. Charlotte is a seventh generation descendant of the earliest French family member posted on Madeleine Menard’s website. This information indicates that Charlotte was married to George Grimshaw, son of William (“Guilliamme” in French) Grimshaw.

ii Charlotte Ménard. Elle a épousé Georges Grimshaw, marié(e) 9 sep 1817 à St-Luc, Québec, n. à Allemagne, (fils de Guillaume Grimshaw et Elizabeth Lepninah).

Gratitude is again expressed to Madeleine Menard for making this information available on her website.

Descendants of George and Charlotte Grimshaw’s Children, Marcelina and Eli George Grimshaw

Research by Barbara Bonner, received in November 2008 and in January and February 2009, provides much interesting information on two of George and Charlotte’s children. This information is shown below as a chain of e-mails. Thanks to Barbara for providing these e-mails.

Grimshaw (what else!)

Hi Terry & Tom:

While going back through some of my files I came across some interesting information which I received some time ago. At the time it was somewhat puzzling and I set it aside and promptly forgot about it. Recently I started doing a little checking up on the information and came up with the following.

The information received from a correspondent was about a Mahala/Mahalah Grimshaw who had married a man named John Moses. They had a son baptized on Wolfe Island supposedly at Sacred Heart church in 1846. (Im not sure about this as SC was not established until about 1854) Anyway, on the 1851 census of Wolfe Island there are a George Moses b ca 1842 and a John Moses b ca 1844. The two boys are residing in the household of George and Charlotte Grimshaw. Nothing was found for John Sr. or Mahala at that time. It is assumed that Mahala died before 1855 since John Sr. married a Catherine Crowley in Cape Vincent, NY in 1855.

John Moses jr. married Christina Sudds in 1869. They were living in Kent Co. Further information that was passed on indicated that the obit for Christina states that she was once married to Eli Grimshaw and also says that after his /_death_/ she married John Moses and he raised her /_three_/ children from her marriage to Eli. I found Christina and John on the 1881 census of Kent Co. and there are two children there with the name of Moses but who would have been born prior to the marriage of John and Christina. One is Joseph b ca 1861 and the other is Louise W. b ca 1865. It would appear that these are Grimshaw children and the third child is probably the Mary J. that you previously found Terry. Further proof of these children would probably be found in the previous census records which unfortunately arent on line and it means heading down to Queens University to see the films. I have done a little further research through the civil registration which I wont go into at the moment, however, I wanted to pass this on to you for your comments. It is possible that Mahala is a sister to George & Zephaniah, one of the three younger girls in the family of William and Elizabeth according to the 1800 census. The name Mahala appears twice in Georges family line which seems significant. It may be that we have found another family line!

Best regards,

Barbara

Mahala Grimshaw and John Moses

Skye Yung posted the following message on the Grimshaw Message Board on Ancestry.com in September 2003:

Does anyone know the parents of George Grimshaw ? He married a Charlotte Menard. Would anyone know if he had a sister Mahala? Seeking info on a Mahala Grimshaw that married a John Moses before 1846.Mahala passed away before 1855. John Moses remarried a Catherine Crowley 1855. Family lived on /around Wolfe Island Frontenac Co Ont.

Skye

Terry Micks provided the following reply in October:

I have several Mahala’s in my Grimshaw line. I am a direct descendant of George and Charlotte. George and Charlotte’s son, Alexander has a daughter named Mahala. Alexander also has a granddaughter who was named Mahala so it would certainly seem to be a family name that may have originated with George’s generation. There are several researchers working on this particular family line. We believe George to be the son of William and Elizabeth (Lepinah?) who lived in New Hampshire prior to moving to Canada. George married Charlotte in Quebec and they settled in Wolfe Island for many years before coming to the U.S. Census records indicate that George probably had several sisters, one of whom may have been Betsy I believe, but I do not know if there is documentation of the other sisters. This is truly exciting information because it opens up a whole new avenue of research.

Mahala Grimshaw may have been the sister of George Grimshaw (m. Charlotte Menard), who is described on a companion webpage.

Hi Tom:

I quickly went through the sites you attached. There are bits and pieces in each of them that I have in my file for Christina and John Moses. One thing I find interesting is the fact that Eli Grimshaw was supposed to have been deceased when Christina married again. There are more than one possibility that could have happened. They could have divorced, or perhaps just separated and because they ended up in different countries, they just married again whether legal or not. On the marriage registration for Christina and John, she is listed under her maiden name and not as Christina Grimshaw. This sounds like the same sort of situation with Zephaniah and his many marriages. His wife Asenath was still alive when he married Ellen Sheahan. Consider the story told by Asenath when she moved to Grey Co., that her husband had died in the American war! Anyway, would genealogy be as interesting if all our relatives were saints?

I just keep plugging away at the research. I find the Grimshaws the most interesting of my families.. I do have to once in a while tell myself to work on some of my other lines which seem to get thoroughly neglected when I get immersed in the Grimshaw family. I have updated and added to the information you now have of mine. I have been able to add a little more information to the line of John Nelson Grimshaw. After his death during the civil war, his family seemed to have disappeared and I have managed to track down two or three of his children which helps fill in a bit. And I am still adding to my file on tragic accidents.

If you feel it would be helpful, you can add my e-mail address to the William and Elizabeth site. It will possibly cause an increase in e-mail but it might also bring some further info on some of the more elusive relatives.

Best Regards,

Barbara

Hi Tom and Terry:

I think I may have solved the mystery of John Moses and his Grimshaw wife. I finally took the time to check the registers of St. Mary’s R.C. Cathedral for any reference to the Moses family. As you know I was rather suspect about the baptism of John Moses in 1846 supposedly in Sacred Heart Church on Wolfe Island due to the fact that this church was not established at that time. Fortunately I did find the references to this family and there seems to have been an error with regard to the mother’s name in this particular baptism which has created some of the problem. I found the following in St. Mary’s

1845 – Moses, George, baptized August 7, 12 months old, son of John Moses and Marcelline Grimshaw. Sponsors, Fabien Jantreau and Bridget Sweeny.

1846 – Moses, John, baptized June 8, born January 13, son of John Moses and Mahaly Grimshaw of Long Island. Sponsors, Thomas Germain and Julia Besain

1847 – Mrs. Marceline Moses, interred February 18, aged 21 years of Long Island. Witness, her husband, John Moses and Martin Staley.

These records seem to indicate that the entry for John’s baptism has an incorrect Christian name given for his mother. I would therefore assume that these entries refer to Marceline, daugther of George Grimshaw and Charlotte Menard. Her age of 21 at death fits in with a possible year of birth for her of 1847. Your comments would be appreciated.

Barbara 🙂

Hi Tom:

I have been doing a bit of research on the family of John Moses and Marceline Grimshaw and have found a few more things to pass on. I thought I might just ramble on a bit about what I found and what I have gleaned from other information passed on to me. I hope you can make some sense of it.

-John and Marceline had 2 sons Joseph and John. After Marcelines death John remarried to Catherine Crowley and had a daughter Catherine apparently born on Wolfe Island.

-Eli George Grimshaw married Hanna Christine Sudds ca 1860. They had 3 children, Joseph born ca 1861 on Wolfe Island (bapt. Found), Louisa Ann, born ca 1863 (possibly WI or Kingston), Mary Jane b ca 1865 (possibly WI or Kingston). Eli and Hanna must have separated sometime after Mary Janes birth. Eli remarried to Elizabeth Sarah Ann Pepper and had son, James Leonard born ca 1869 in NY. In the meantime, Hanna Christina remarried to John Moses, son of John and Marceline, August 29, 1869 in Kingston. John Moses died January 21, 1918 in Wallaceburg, Kent Co., ON aged 73 (In an old e-mail from Skye (2003) she states that she found Christinas obit and it does state that she was once married to Eli Grimshaw and when her husband passed she remarried to John Moses and he raised her three children from her marriage to Eli. – unfortunately I never found out where she found this obit)

-It would appear that John Moses and Hanna Christina Sudds did not have any children, however, they did raise Hanna Christinas children from her marriage to Eli Grimshaw. On all records that I have found, the three children use the surname Moses, and on marriage records, they list parents as John and Christina. – Eli is not mentioned at all.

-Joseph (Grimshaw) Moses married Susan Jane Garvey, April 18, 1882, in Wallaceburg, Kent Co., ON. They had a family of at least 5 children, Charlot, John, George, Alfred Hyram, and Shephard. Shephard enlisted in the Canadian army in WWI. Shephard was found in 1920 living in Michigan with wife Amy and son Dennis aged 1` month, born Michigan. Alfred Hyram married Emily Schram, January 19, 1916 in London, Middlesex Co., ON.

-Louisa Ann (Grimshaw) Moses married George Wilson, January 1, 1879 in Wallaceburg, Kent Co., ON. I have nothing further on this couple so far.

-Mary Jane (Grimshaw) Moses married William Slocum January 22, 1877 in Wallaceburg, Kent Co., ON. Not much else found on this couple. There is a death of a child, William John Slocum, 3 Dec. 1879 aged 2, a possible son of this marriage. By 1894, Mary Jane is in Michigan, and married John Diggan (as per information from Terry). They are living in Wayne Co. Michigan in 1900.

I havent yet entered this information into my genealogy program but wanted to pass on these bits and pieces for your information – hope you find it interesting.

Regards,

Barbara

#Took step-father, John Moses, surname

Interestingly, John Moses, son of John and Marcelina (Grimshaw) Moses married his aunt, Hannah Christiana Sudds Grimshaw (former wife of Eli George Grimshaw) and raised his three cousins as his children. This connection is confirmed in a subsequent train of e-mails shown below.

Thomas Grimshaw wrote:

Barbara,

This is complicated!

So John Moses Jr. raised the three children of Eli Grimshaw, who was the brother of his mother Marcelina, and therefore his uncle, I guess, correct? That is, he raised his cousins as his children? Kinda weird…

Anyway, too bad Marcelina wasn’t Mahala and a sister of George, thus accounting for another of William’s children….

It is a rather complicated arrangement – including the fact that John married his ‘aunt-in-law’. I think I have that right but it is late! I wonder if Eli and Christina divorced or if they just said ‘what the heck’ since both were in different countries. On the marriage registration for John and Christina, she is listed as ‘single’. I’ve wondered the same thing about Zephaniah and Asenath, if they divorced before he married Ellen Sheean. Aren’t our ancestors interesting?

Too bad we didn’t discover another sister but at least we now we know what happened to Marceline

Do you think that’s true?

Tom:

I certainly think it is a possibility that there was a Mahalah in the original family. The name appears about 3 times in my records, although always in George’s line. That might indicate that George had a sister by that name – or it might come from Charlotte’s family, although, it doesn’t seem to be (in my mind) a French sounding name OR they could just have liked the name! I certainly would like to put names to the 3 daughters and 1 son which still don’t seem to be identified in that original family. Nothing further has been found for the sister Betsy who married William Blair. More than one William Blair appears in the early census records but without the names of the other members in the family it’s impossible to follow the line. By the 1850 census when all names appear, either William or Betsy could be deceased and I have never found anything that seemed relevant. I belong to the New England Historic Genealogical Society and they have a lot of records on line for members, however, I have never come across anything on the family. Maybe I should contact them to try and find out where would be the best place to search for records for the area they lived in. It might mean a visit to the area or hiring a researcher which might be worth while if records could be found. I have searched through any early papers that I have from the beginning of my research and I have found nothing that gives any reference to an early Mahalah. I guess we will just have to keep digging.

Hi Tom:

Hope all is well with you. Things seem to be a bit hectic here, however, I can always find time to do some research. I keep thinking it is time to try and organize all my information into some form that others can understand but there always seems to be another lead to chase.

I have been following up George Grimshaw’s daughter Christina who first married John Egner and had 3 daughters, two of whom survived infancy namely Charlotte and Sarah Ann. I had never been able to find anything further on her until just recently when I discovered that, after John Egner died, she remarried and had additional children. John died between 1851 and 1861 although I don’t have the exact date. About 1861 Christina remarried to Robert Andrew Horne and subsequently had at least 4 more children all born in Ontario, Emma, Edgar, Elizabeth and Alice. By 1880 the family is living in Wisconsin. I haven’t so far been able find anything further on them in that area. Christina and John Egner’s daughter Charlotte born ca 1844 married Peter Greenwood probably on Wolfe Island and had had 8 children all born in Ontario. I have found additional information on several of them. A death record for Christina’s husband Peter Greenwood has been found but not for Christina. I am attaching a descendant’s chart for what I have found so far on Christina for your information. If you want any further detail let me know. To date I have been unable to find anything further on Christina’s daughter Sarah Ann Egner but will keep trying!

Best regards,

Barbara

Hi Tom:

I finally have an opportunity to sit down at the computer again after having family visiting for the weekend. I think I have all the bits and pieces entered in the system for Christina Grimshaw’s family.

I was just reading over my e-mail to you and notice that I inadvertently referred to Peter Greenwood’s wife as Christina which should, of course, have been Charlotte. A death record was found for Peter but not for Charlotte.

I am sending the descendant’s chart for Christina again which includes a couple of updates that I have since found. I have been trying to come up with some easy way to send the additional information which includes sources and notes on my research. There doesn’t seem to be any way of doing that other than a genealogy report which includes everything. So that is attached also.

Feel free to post what additional information you think would be of interest on George & Charlotte’s web page. There is no information on any living person. I am always interested in any additional information that anyone might have that would add to (or correct) what I have been able to discover.

Hope everything comes through to you OK. Good luck!

Barbara

Probable Connection to William Grimshaw, Revolutionary War Veteran

George Grimshaw is indicated in the above records as being the son of William and Elizabeth (Zephaniah or Lepninah) Grimshaw. This William is likely to be the William who fought in the Revolutionary War on the side of the colonials. His service is described on a companion webpage. After the war, this William lived in New Hampshire; records of his life life in that state are also described on a companion webpage. Since George was born in New Hampshire (see 1880 U.S. Census record below) at the time that William had a growing family there, it is highly likely (but still unproven) that George was their son. The 1880 census record indicates that George’s parents were both born in England, but no connection of William back to Lancashire or elsewhere in England has yet been established.

One of George’s brothers was apparently Zephaniah Grimshaw, who was probably named after his mother’s maiden name (see above.) Zephaniah and his several families are described on another companion webpage. His oldest son by his first marriage (to Jerusha Hunter) was named William (apparently after Zephaniah’s father, the Revolutionary War William.) This younger William was married to Mary Ann Blair and settled on Wolfe Island; they and their family are described on yet another companion webpage. Thus, it is likely that George and Charlotte, when they settled on Wolfe Island, joined George’s nephew, William (and Mary Ann) Grimshaw, who had moved there earlier.

Many descendants of George and Charlotte hope for “smoking gun” proof that George was the son of William, which will establish their lineage back to a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

Possible Mariner Connections of George Grimshaw Line

Family lore has it that George came from an English family of mariners and immigrated to Canada after marrying Charlotte, a French Canadian. An example of this family lore is a letter from Thomas H. Grimshaw (a descendant of George and Charlotte) to his niece, Fern Grimshaw, written in 1939, which contains the excerpt shown below. Thanks to Robert Grimshaw for making the letter from which this excerpt came available to the author.

Yes, I knew all your grandfathers brothers. They were George, John, Alex and Mike and a sister Lida. Their fathers name was John and his fathers name was John (editors note – this is in error; the correct name is George) and he came from England from a very rich family. His father owned a bunch of ships and my great-grandfather was Captain on one of them and he sailed from England to Canada one time. When he went back home to England he took a wife with him, a French girl. His dad disowned him for marrying in Canada and gave him his share and sent him back to Canada to stay. So that started the Grimshaws in this country

Further indication of possible mariner connections of this Grimshaw line comes from the records (written about 1984) of Lyra Hodgin, a South Dakota descendant of John James, the third child of George and Charlotte, concerning John James:

Our knowledge of the Grimshaw family is quite limited. It begins with John Grimshaw who was a Canadian who was a sailor on the Great Lakes we were told by his son George (T.) Grimshaw, who was my Grandfather. I do not know which Lake but since he lived in Wisconsin the first we knew of him I have an idea it was Superior. However George G. was born in Canada so it could have been one of the others.
