Christopher Grimshaw and Jane Annear were married in Truro, Cornwall, England sometime in April, May or June 1845. Christopher was born in 1816, and Jane in 1825. The family emigrated to the U.S. through the Port of Buffalo, New York in September 1848. Their two oldest children, Mary and Martha, were born in England before the family went to the U.S. The family settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Christopher and Jane lived out their lives there. Christopher was apparently a blacksmith. He was naturalized on June 14, 1854 in the Court District of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
Christopher and Jane Grimshaw had 10 children, all of whom, remarkably, were girls. The probability of having 10 children, all of one sex, is 1 in 1024, or about 0.1 percent. At least six of the girls were married. Two died at a young age. The family was recorded in the 1850 U.S. Census living in Hustisford, Wisconsin. In the 1860, 1870, and 1900 U.S. Censuses the couple lived in Ward 5 of Milwaukee. The family origins of Christopher Grimshaw in England have not yet been found.
Christopher and Jane are buried in Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee with four of their daughters. Another daughter is buried at another location in the same cemetery.
Another Grimshaw family was living in the Milwaukee area during the same timeframe as Christopher and Jane Grimshaw and their family. The family line was started by George and Susan (Terrier) Grimshaw, who immigrated to New York City and later moved to Milwaukee. This family is the subject of a companionwebpage.
