1870 U.S. Census Records
Grimshaws in Ancestry.com Indexes and Census Indexes at the LDS Library
Two surveys of Grimshaws in the 1870 U.S. Census were performed for this webpage — an earlier manual examination of individual census indexes for 49 states, and a later on-line search of all 50 states combined. The online survey was much more complete and included both heads of households and other household members (spouses, children, other relatives and live-ins). This survey yielded 442 Grimshaw individuals. The earlier survey included only heads of households and yielded 165 Grimshaws. The results of both surveys are included in this webpage.

Indicated Grimshaw Immigrants
The Grimshaw who immigrated to the U.S.and were counted in the 1870 census are indicated by their birthplace when it was outside the U.S. (England, Ireland or Canada). Most are Grimshaw men who came ither before or after they were married. These “indicated immigrants” are summarzed below:

1870 U.S. Census Information on Ancestry.com
The following information on the 1870 U.S. Census is provided on the Ancestry.com website:
Description
This database details those persons enumerated in the 1870 United States Federal Census, the Nineteenth Census of the United States. In addition, the names of those listed on the population schedule are linked to the actual images of the 1870 Federal Census, copied from the National Archives and Records Administration microfilm, M593, 1761 rolls; part of Minnesota T132. (If you do not initially find the name on the page that you are linked to, try a few pages forward or backward, as sometimes different pages had the same page number.)
Enumerators of the 1870 census were instructed to record the names of every person in the household. Added to this, enumerators were presented with printed instructions, which account for the greater degree of accuracy compared with earlier censuses. Enumerators were asked to include the following categories in the census: name; age at last birthday (if a child was under one year of age, months of age were to be stated as fractions, such as 1/12); sex; color; profession; occupation or trade of every male and female; value of real estate; place of birth; whether mother and father were of foreign birth; whether born or married within the year and the month; those who could not read; those who could not write; whether deaf, dumb, blind, or insane or “idiotic”. No relationships were shown between members of a household. The categories allowed Congress to determine persons residing in the United States for collection of taxes and the appropriation of seats in the House of Representatives.
Additional Information
The United States was the first country to call for a regularly held census. The Constitution required that a census of all “Persons…excluding Indians not taxed” be performed to determine the collection of taxes and the appropriation of seats in the House of Representatives. The first nine censuses from 1790-1870 were organized under the United States Federal Court system. Each district was assigned a U.S. marshal who hired other marshals to administer the census. Governors were responsible for enumeration in territories.
The official enumeration day of the 1870 census was 1 June 1870. All questions asked were supposed to refer to that date. The 1870 census form called for the dwelling houses to be numbered in the order of visitation; families numbered in order of visitation; and the name of every person whose place of abode on the first day of June 1870 was with the family.

Earlier Manual Survey of 1870 Census Indexes
Prior to the online survey, the indexes for the 1870 U.S. Census for 49 states were manually reviewed for Grimshaw entries for this survey (SD was not available). A total of about 165 heads of household with the surname of Grimshaw, or variants of the name, were enumerated in the census.
Most of the census indexes reviewed for this survey were published in the 1997-2001 timeframe in a fine series by Heritage Quest, Bountiful, UT (Raeone Steuart, editor.) The 1870 census is described about the same in these indexes in the Foreword and Introduction. The text of these two sections is presented near the bottom of this webpage from the “Connecticut” volume1 as representative of the series.
In the interest of time efficiency, the Grimshaw entry information was “direct keyed” into word processing software as the indexes were reviewed. For each Grimshaw found in a particular state index (starting with Alabama,) four lines were entered:
Last Name, First Name
Age, Sex, Race, Birthplace
County, Place in County (Where Recorded)
Volume Number, Page Number on Microfilm
Generally, only the heads of households were recorded in the census (see description of the census for exceptions.) The 1870 census was microfilmed twice. National Archives film series M593 is from the second filming and contains most (if not all) of the Grimshaw entries. However the index should be double checked to confirm this before a film is ordered.
After all entries found in an index were recorded, the index citation was entered. If there was more than one index to review for a state, the entries from the second index were entered after the citation for the first index. The second index entries were then followed with an entry for the citation for the second index. (This is easier than it sounds, as you will see when you look at examples below.)

Heritage Quest Description of the 1870 Census
The following description is taken from the “Connecticut” volume1 of the Heritage Quest series on the 1870 census for the various states. It is generally representative of descriptions appearing in the other volumes.
Foreword
The Census Act of 1790 provided a mandate for counting the United States population at ten-year intervals. The purpose of the census was to insure proper citizen representation at the national level of government, the House of Representatives. Early census data is sparse and shows only the names of heads of household. Statistics of other family members are given by age group, sex, and race (either white or Negro).
The Census Act was amended frequently over the years, however, and by 1850 the schedules reveal much more about individuals within each household. They include each person’s name, age, sex, race, place of birth, and for those over 15 years of age, occupation. From 1850 to 1870, the Bureau of the Census collected data according to two designated units, district and subdivision. Districts usually corresponded to a State or part of a State and subdivision to a county or part thereof. Descriptions of these units, delineating boundaries, are available in microfilm as “Descriptions of Census Enumeration Districts, 1830-1890, and, 1910-1950 in National Archives Series T1224, available in 146 rolls. National Archives Series T1210 contains 10 rolls for 1900.
This index volume has been greatly anticipated and promises to fill in many genealogical gaps. As for the census itself, it is not entirely accurate. Each census taker took to the road the first day of June 1870 with the task of
completing the count within the subsequent five month period. One notable feature of this particular census is that events were to be recorded as though the census takers had performed their duties on June 1, 1870 regardless of when they actually visited a home. Adherence to the rule made for some awkward notations. Generally, all those who normally lived under the same roof as of June 1st were to be counted as members of that household, even if they were not home on the actual day the census takers dropped by. If a family member had died after June 1st but before the day the census taker visited, that individual was listed as still living. Conversely, infants born after June 1, 1870 were omitted from the listing even if they crawled up to the census taker and bit his leg.3Forms for recording the 1870 schedules contained 20 columns with the following headings (punctuation and capitalization as found in the original):
1. Dwelling houses numbered in the order of visitation.
2. Families numbered in the order of visitation.
3. The name of every person whose place of abode on the first day of June, 1870 was in the family.
Description
4. Age at last birthday. If under 1 year, give months in fractions, thus 3112.
5. Sex -Males (M), Females (F).
6. Color -White (W), Black (B), Mulatto (M), Chinese (C), Indian (I).
7. Profession, Occupation, or Trade of each person, male or female.
Real Estate Owned
8. Value of Real Estate. 9. Personal Property.
10. Place of Birth, State or Territory of the U.S., Country if foreign born.
Parentage
11. Father of foreign birth.
12. Mother of foreign birth.
13. lf born within the year, state month (Jan., Feb., etc.).
14. lf married within the year, state month (Jan., etc.).
15. Attended school within the year.
Education
16. Cannot read.
17. Cannot write.
18. Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane or idiotic.
Constitutional Relations
19. Male Citizen of the U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards.
20. Male Citizen of U.S. 21 years of age and upwards whose right to vote is denied or abridged on other grounds than rebellion or other crime.
When using this index to find your ancestors, keep the following caveat in mind:
1. Misspellings. Census enumerators were not necessarily well educated, spelling was not standardized, and there was a high rate of illiteracy among the population. Thus, names were typically spelled as they sounded to the enumerators. In short, the art of transcribing unfamiliar surnames could have been as challenging as transliterating German to Chinese.
2. Name changes. Through the years, many people anglicized their names. For example: Schwartz became Black; Weiss became White; Zimmerman became Carpenter; and Schneider became Taylor. The list goes on.
3. Variant Spellings. If you know an ancestor was in a specific township or county, don’t be discouraged if the name doesn’t appear in the census index. Instead search for him page by page in the last or the next census. His name might appear as a variant spelling you may have missed in the index.
4. County boundary changes. As states developed, the boundaries of their various town- ships and counties changed quite often. Hence, though a family may have remained in the same location, they may have been enumerated in a different township or county from year to year. To determine the correct county in which to search, refer to the map on page XXI.
5. Errors! Two copies of the 1870 schedules were made. The intent was to keep the original copy in the courthouse of the County. A copy, transcribed from the original, was to be sent to the Federal courthouse for that jurisdiction, and a second copy was to be sent to Washington, D.C. The generation of handwritten copies made for many errors. In addition to errors made in recopying, many microfilm copies are difficult to read, and handwriting varies – some good, some bad. Even the best indexer may make an error!
6. Enumeration mistakes. The enumerator might not have read his instructions. He could have listed a child born after 1 June when he visited the house on 20 August, or not listed a person still alive on 1 June who died between 2 June and 20 August. Or, Dad might have been helping a neighbor build a barn and would have been enumerated in the neighbor’s household.
Finally, use your imagination and common sense in census research! Those of us who know how painstaking it is to read census page after census page applaud the publication of this computer generated index.
Good Hunting!
Jane Adams Clarke
Introduction
Format of the Index
The index is alphabetized by surname, given name, middle name or initial, occupation or title, age, and county. All entries that cannot be alphabetized, for whatever reason, are put at the beginning of the index.
Only Heads-of-Household are extracted with the following exceptions:
1. Someone residing within the home who has a different surname, regardless of age.
2. Any male 50 years of age or older.
3. Any female 70 years of age or older.
4. Any color or race change (where the surname stays the same). In this case the oldest person listed is extracted.
5. All individuals living in an institution such as an orphanage, hospital, or poor house.
Special Symbols and Markings
* Interpretation of the name is in doubt.
+ Spelling of the name while “unusual” is correct, as the census taker listed it.
? Portions of the name were illegible, due to a torn, smeared, or ink blotted page.
-The information was not given.
[ ] Brackets have been used to include additional information about the person listed. Such information might be occupation, title, malady, or miscellaneous information useful to the user.

-Not Given
In cities, the following designations are used to identify wards. A ward number precedes the designator -WD, for example:
1-WD 1st Ward
2-WD 2nd Ward
S-WD South Ward
N-WD North Ward
General Indexing Rules
When abbreviations appear in the entries on the microfilm they are spelled as-is. Since it is not always possible to tell exactly what an abbreviation stands for, they are normally not spelled out. For example:
Jas Brown would be entered as BROWN, Jas
One major exception to this rule occurs when the surname has been abbreviated. The name is extracted once, ”as is,” and then a second time “spelled out,” if a highly probable name can be derived from the abbreviation. For example, if the census taker listed the name as Thadeus Wmwell it is extracted once as it is shown and then it is spelled out in a second (double) entry, Thadeus Williamwell, because it is unlikely that anyone would search for this individual under the abbreviated spelling.
There is no space entered between compound names in the index. Apostrophes and hyphens are the only special punctuation marks used, and they are only used when the entry looks like a mistake without them. When the apostrophes are added it becomes clear that the D’ is a contraction for De. When a surname has been hyphenated it is entered, as is, with the hyphen. For example:
SMITH-BARNEY, Juliet.
There are three special groups of names that do not neatly fit into any single category. They are: Nuns, Brothers (Ecclesiastical), and Indians.
After a woman has taken her final vows and begins her life as a nun, she is no longer addressed by her surname. She instead becomes Sister Mary , Sister Margaret, Sister Victoria, etc. Because of this, most nuns are listed simply as Sister ” .” In order to keep all the nuns who have not been listed with a surname in one area in the index, they are entered:
SISTER, Catherine
SISTER, Mary Beth
SISTER, Victoria
By entering them in this way, it is possible to make one quick search to see if any of the nuns is the person being sought. Should any of the nuns happen to be listed with a sur- name, they are entered as usual.
The same rules that apply to nuns apply to ecclesiastical brothers and to Indians, except that the word “BROTHER” or “INDIAN” is substituted for “SISTER.” The terms “Brother” and “Indian” are used here as the surname and it is entered as above. If, however, they happen to be listed with a surname they are entered as usual.
There are some entries with no surname or given name listed on the census record. For entries with no name, three dashes have been used.
A bracketed area is used to include additional or miscellaneous information which might help conclusively identify the person. This includes, but is not limited to, occupations, titles, and maladies. They, however, are only entered when the given name is missing or when such information has been included in the name field on the microfilmed record. Examples are:
KILLAM, [Seam tress]
WOLSON, [Blacksmith]
FARNSWORTH, [Blind]
ADAMS, [Deceased-Estate ]
BROOKS, [lnsane-In Jail]
KONRAD, Wilhelm [Dr]
PATRIDGE, John [Barrister]
GRANT, U S [President]
PIPER, Jas [General]
In all cases, only important titles are placed in brackets. Brackets are not put around Mr., Ms., Mrs., Sir, Jr., or Sr.
Standard Abbreviations
Locality names such as Creek, River, Ward, etc. have been abbreviated. These abbrevia- tions have been standardized and will be used consistently in all census indexes:

P O Post Office |
Mrs Mistress |

RVR River |
Occasionally, names have been entered twice. The reason for this is that if the name were extracted only as it is listed, it could be placed in a position in the index where most users would never think to look. In such cases, when appropriate, the name has been “double entered”, once as it was listed and a second time as it should be listed. This is done only for “gross” errors in spelling or for highly likely different interpretations. For example, the census taker listed the name as Whosay Pelassquez when it should have been Jose Velassquez. It has been extracted this way:
PELASSQUEZ, Whosay (First time)
VELASSQUEZ, Jose (Second time)
When the interpretation of an entry is in doubt, an asterisk (*) is used to show this. If more than one interpretation is highly possible, it will be double-entered.
If part of the name is illegible due to a smeared, torn, or ink-blotted page; question marks are used to show this. Although the number of question marks has been designed to “roughly” show the number of letters perceived to be missing, after three, the value of adding additional question marks is dubious at best. Questions marks, however, are not used for difficult interpretations and never more than three question marks are used per entry. Therefore, if it appears that this entry could be the person being sought, a check of the original microfilm is recommended. In all cases, it is important to remember that the person extracting the information has been trained to do what would be deemed the most helpful.
Occasionally, entries have been encountered that were plainly written and spelled but, appear to be errors. In these cases, a plus sign (+) has been entered after the entry to show that while it looks like an error, it is spelled as the census taker listed it. The plus sign has been used sparingly and only for “really strange” looking names. Example:
ZBREWSKI, Stanislaus+
SQAKAWSKI, William+
Page Numbers
Although most pages of the original census records show several different page numbers, this index uses the National Archives’ numbers which were hand stamped in the upper right corner of the page when the records were bound into volumes. There are quite a few page numbering errors. Because of this, it is not unusual to find several pages listed with identical numbers. In addition, pages may even be listed as 491, 491 a, 491 b, or 491 c. When a letter is included on the end of a page number, that page number is listed minus that letter.
Another problem is page numbers which were omitted. For example, if the page numbers were listed on the microfilm as 491, 492, 493, no number, 496, 497, the number 494 is used after page 493. It has been done this way because 494 would be the most logical choice. Page 495 would be omitted and the numbering would then commence with page 496 and continue in its regular fashion.
Although great care has been taken in reading and editing this index, errors may have occurred. In a continuous effort to improve the index the editors would appreciate being informed should any be found. Please send all corrections to:
