Isaac Spice & Lettuce (Letitia) Grimshaw

A Family Line from Virginia That Migrated to Kentucky and Then Indiana

“Grishaw” is apparently a derived name from another name – probably Grimshaw or, possibly, Grischau or Grischow (German names). Most of the earliest records for Isaac Spice Grimshaw apparently find him in Virginia. These records indicate that he had the name “Grishaw” from the time of his arrival in America or his birth in Virginia – it was not a mistake of a census taker, for example. Isaac married “Lettuce” (probably Leticia, Letitia or Lettrice) in Virginia, and the couple had seven children – Susan, Priscilla, Elizabeth, William, Hannah, Isaac and Martha. Most, if not all, of the family migrated to Kentucky, and many subsequently moved to Indiana.

Most records found on the internet indicate that Isaac Grimshaw was born in Virginia, but one website indicates that he was born in Scotland. If this record is accurate it is much more likely that his family was originally the Lancastrian “Grimshaw” than of German origins:

70. Isaac Spice GRISHAW was born about 1755 in Scotland. He died 18 May 1835 in Pulaski Co. Kentucky. Isaac Spice GRISHAW married Lettrice GRISHAW.

71. Lettrice GRISHAW was born about 1774 in Viginia. She died about 1840 in Campbell Co. Virginia.

In addition, internet search indicates that “Grimshaw” had been shortened to “Grishaw” in at least one census in Yorkshire. Isaac Grishaw’s family line is included on the “Grimshaw Origins” website in the likelihood that it was originally a Grimshaw family line.

Description of Isaac Spice and Letitia Grimshaw from Finda-A-Grave

An Interesting biography of Isaac and Letitia Grimshaw appears on a description of the grave of their son, Isaac Grimshaw, Sr on Find-A-Grave. It is shown below, and the grave appears further down on this webpage.

Isaac Grishaw, Sr
Birth: Apr. 6, 1789, Campbell County, Virginia, USA
Death: Jul. 16, 1851
Correct, Ripley County, Indiana, USA

Isaac Grishaw Sr. (1789-1851) is the 7th known child of Isaac Spice Grishaw (1755-1835) and Letticia Grishaw (1753-1840). Isaac Spice Grishaw is believed to have been born in Scotland (actually may have been Virginia) and migrated to Virginia where in 1773 he married Letticia Unkonwn (born in Virginia). Isaac and Letticia migrated westward through the Cumberland Gap and settled in Pulaski co., Kentucky along the Buck Creek in the northwest part of the county btw 1815-1820. It is believed Isaac Spice Grishaw and his wife, Letticia, are buried on the land that was their farm, but the burial sites have not been located. Two of their children ( Isaac Grishaw Sr, and Hannah Grishaw Acton (1785-1826) (wife of Aaron Acton (1795-1847)) migrated to Ripley co., Indiana between 1815-1820. Isaac Grishaw Sr and his sister, Hannah Grishaw Acton (with her husband Aaron) settled in Shelby twp., Ripley co., Indiana. Aaron Acton and Hannah Grishaw Acton are believed to have been buried on their farm, however, the actual site has not been determined. What was once Aaron and Hannah’s farmland is now part of the Jefferson Proving Grounds in Jefferson co., Indiana.

Addition of Information on Matilda (Grishaw) Fish by Laura Mitchell

Laura Mitchell has contributed valuable information and a picture of one of Isaac and Lettuce Grimshaw’s descendants. The information and picture are shown below.

October 22, 2005

I am a descendant of Matilda A. Grishaw, daughter of Madison Grishaw and America Ann Rutledge.

Your pages are extensive, but in the list of Madison and America’s children you have Matilda as born the last, 1860 I think it said.

Actually, she was the first child (at least known).  Her birth date was February 4, 1842 and she died Oct. 21, 1928. Her spouse was the Rev. Francis Asbury Fish.

Unfortunately, the date on her tombstone for death is slightly off.  How do these things happen?  The date of birth on the tombstone I have to hope is correct. In the 1900 census she says she was born in February 1842, and there was a birth story in a newspaper for her 83rd birthday that seems to bear out that date.  Here is that story:

Tipton Daily Tribune Thursday, Feb. 5, 1925 p. 5

ATTENDS MOTHERS BIRTHDAY

D.S. Fish and Wife at Middletown Wednesday for Enjoyable Event

Wednesday Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Fish were at Middletown and attended the celebration held at the home of Mrs. J.E. Moore in honor of the 83rd birthday of Mrs. Matilda Fish, mother of Mrs. Moore and D.S. Fish and widow of the late Rev. F.A. Fish.

Mrs. Fish is in excellent health for one of her years and moves about freely. She takes great pride in a flock of chickens she is raising and devotes much of her time to them, only two days this winter delegating them to some other member of the household.  Mrs. Fish has been residing with her daughter, Mrs. J.E. Moore in Middletown for some time.  She also has a son A. B. Fish in Middletown with whom she spends a portion of her time.

A big birthday dinner was served at the Moore home and Mr. and Mrs. Perkins, the latter a daughter who resides in Indianapolis, Mr. and Mrs. D.S. Fish of Tipton, Mr. and Mrs. A.D. [should say A.B.] Fish of Middletown were present.  One other son, George of Bunker Hill, is in poor health and was unable to be present at this enjoyable event.

Mrs. Matilda Fish’s husband was one of the early preachers of the county. Her maiden name was Grishaw and her mother’s name was America Grishaw who resided in Sharpsville many years, and who owned a farm which adjoined the north edge of Sharpsville.

Mrs. Fish greatly enjoyed the day with her children and they in turn were pleased to be with the mother and find her in such good health despite her advanced years.

A.E. Moore=Annie Ellen Fish, Mrs. John E. Moore

D.S. Fish =David Smith Fish

A.B. Fish = Alonzo Brown Fish, sometimes called “Lon”

Mr. and Mrs. Perkins = Lusetta Malinda Fish Perkins and Omer Perkins

Here is her obituary:

Tipton Daily Tribune, p. 2, Oct. 22, 1928 (Monday) – Died Sunday Oct. 21, 1928

MATILDA FISH DEAD

Pioneer Resident of Sharpsville Community Died at Middletown

Mrs. Matilda A. Fish, mother of D.S. Fish of this city and a pioneer of the Sharpsville community, died Sunday night, at 11:30 o’clock at the home of a daughter, Mrs. John E. Moore in Middletown, where she had made her home for the past eighteen years after the death of her husband, Rev. F. A. Fish, former pastor of the North Indiana Methodist conference.

She had been in very poor health for some time but only for a week was she critically ill. Her death was not unexpected.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 o’clock at the Sharpsville Methodist church and burial will be in the Sharpsville cemetery.

Mrs. Fish is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Moore at Middletown and Mrs. O.M. Perkins at Indianapolis and three sons, A. B. Fish of Middletown, George Fish of Bunker Hill and D. S. Fish of this city.  D.S. Fish at this time is in Martinsville taking treatment and he was advised of his mother’s death Monday morning.

The deceased was a member of the Grishaw family at Sharpsville and leaves several relatives and many friends in that community where she resided for many years.

The newspaper date was supplied by a researcher in Tipton County .  Matilda apparently died in Henry County, Indiana.

Notes for SARAH HYATT:

The Tanglewood Cemetery has Sarah’s stone reading 27 Nov 1828 to 5 Jan 1894. The marriage certificate says 15 October 1839… I have trouble believing that she married at age 13. Something has got to be off here…

7. GEORGE WASHINGTON3 GRISHAW (ISAAC2, ISAAC SPICE1) was born 17 January 1814 in Kentucky86,87, and died 26 January 1865 in Tipton County, Indiana88. He married (1) MARTHA HOLMAN 22 September 1836 in Ripley County, Indiana89. She was born 19 April 181290, and died 03 November 185290. He married (2) RACHEL BOWLSBY 29 September 185791. She was born 09 April 1815 in New Jersey92, and died 18 May 1893 in Tipton County, Indiana.

Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON GRISHAW:

In the 1860 census, Washington reported Real Property valued at $6500, and Personal Property worht $1000. He appears in this census with Rachel, indicating that Martha Holman had died before. As no marriage record is found in the Indiana State records prior to 1850, I am speculating that they married sometime afterward. For the same reason, I am speculating that Jesse L. Grishaw is a son by Martha rather than by Rachel.

Generation No. 4

10. MARTHA JANE4 WOOLEY (NANCY3 RADICAN, SUSAN SPICA2 GRISHAW, ISAAC SPICE1) was born 15 August 1830 in Ripley County, Indiana111, and died Abt. October 1896 in Ripley County, Indiana112. She married CATLETT TALIAFERRO SHAW 03 June 1848 in Ripley County, Indiana113,114, son of JOSEPH SHAW and REBECCA OWEN. He was born 27 October 1826 in Bracken County, Kentucky115, and died 08 March 1898 in Ripley County, Indiana116.

Notes for CATLETT TALIAFERRO SHAW:

Served in the Civil War as a private, Company G, 123rd regiment, Indiana Volunteers, at Ohio County, Indiana, 24 February 1864. Mustered in at Indianapolis, 12 March 1864, for a term of three years, though he served only one and a half years, to the war’s end. He mustered out at Lexington, North Carolina, 5 August 1865. Service papers describe Catlett (frequently misspelled as Callet) as 5’9″ tall, with dark hair, dark eyes, and dark complexion.

He was reported at roll calls several times as a deserter or straggler, showing up later with the excuse of hospitalization at Greensburg, Indiana, for unspecified illnesses. His health never was very good, and in 1880 he made application for a pension as an invalid veteran. On the application he states that he contracted lung disease during service, which left him with chest pains and a chronic cough; that while at Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia, on 23 July 1864, he contracted dropsy; that while at Wise’s Fork, North Carolina, on 10 March 1865, he contracted rheumatism from marching hard during the day and sleeping on the ground; and that he suffers from heart disease brought on from the Battle of Wise’s Fork, 9 March 1865, which disease causes him to sometimes “fall over as if dead,” and so remain for several hours. I do not know whether he obtained the pension; it is remarkable that he could pinpoint the day that these chronic ailments set in.

After the war he returned to his small farm, located just over a mile west of Versailles, Indiana, and remained there until his death. His wife, Martha, made the family’s clothing, spinning wool into thread on her wheel, then weaving the heavy thread into cloth on her shuttle loom. She died a few years before he did, at which time his oldest daughter, Lucy, and her family moved in to care for him and eventually take over the farm.

George Miller, husband of C T & Martha’s granddaughter Martha Hager, appears to have been C. T.’s legal guardian. A receipt from John L. White’s Dry Goods store, dated November 4, 1896, and signed by W. W. Connelly, reads “Rec’d of Geo Miller Guard. of C T Shaw for Funeral Expenses. Thirty Seven (37 00/100) dollars in full of account.” Two years later, Will W. Connelly, Undertaker, wrote a receipt reading “Versailles Ind. Sept 15th 1898 Received of George Miller Guardian of the Estate C T Shaw Thirty nine dollars in full payment of Burial Expenses of C T Shaw Deceased”.

An Editor’s Affadavit for the Osgood “Journal” states that a notice of the estate sale, to be held 20 August 1898, was posted at the courthouse door, and was published 4 weeks successively, beginning 14 July 1898.

In the 1860 census, Catlett is listed as a farmer with personal property valued at $100.00, and with no real estate. Nancy Hiatt Wooley was living with the family at the time of the 1850 census.

Notes for JOHN H SHAW:

John lost a leg from about the knee down. He lived on the farm with Lucy Jane and Nicholas E Hammon. The leg was buried along the back edge of the house garden. My grandmother, Rissa Hammon Henderson, told me that sometimes when nothing else would alleviate the phantom pains he suffered, they would dig up the leg and re-wrap it or adjust its position, which would satisfy him for a time.

Unmarried. Professor of German Language at Indiana University. My first investigations of the Wooley family were based on his work. His research appears to have been more scholarly than many of his contemporary writers, who assembled family histories with only recall and circumstantial evidence.

Elmer donated his collection of Civil War correspondence written primarily by Carey A. Wooley to the Manuscript Department of the Lilly Library at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Wooley, Shaw and Rattekin cousins are mentioned in these letters.

She married (2) NICHOLAS EBENEEZER HAMMON 10 March 1880 in Ripley County, Indiana201,202, son of JOHN HAMMON and CATHARINE SUTTON. He was born 31 October 1850 in Sedgwick County, Kansas203,204,205, and died 05 July 1920 in Ripley County, Indiana206.

Notes for NIM MYER HAGER:

Lucy awoke one morning and found that Nim was gone. He was never seen nor heard of again.

I long suspected that “Nim” might have been a mis-reading of the abbreviation Wm, but the marriage record is very clearly Nim. Short, perhaps, for Nimrod?

Notes for NICHOLAS EBENEEZER HAMMON:

ANGRY BULL ATTACKED NICH.

OLAS HAMMON INFLICTING IN-

JURIES CAUSING HIS DEATH

Our community was severely shocked Monday when it was learned that Mr. Nicholas Hammon, who resided with his son J. Elbridge Hammon and family, two miles west of town, had succumbed to injuries received Saturday when attacked by an angry bull.

Saturday morning Mr. Hammon was taking a four-year-old polled bull from one inclosure to another on the old Hammon farm adjoining the Stockinger farm on which they live. The animal suddenly attacked Mr. Hammon without a moments warning. Mr. Hammon was kinocked on to a mowing machine his head striking something sharp. A deep gash was cut in the back of his head that required several stitches to sew it up. The animal came at Mr. Hammon again while he lay on the ground and butted him in the left side, breaking his ribs and injuring his heart and left lung. Mr. John Brady, a neighbor, succeeded in beating the bull off Mr. Hammon before it had an opportunity to but him more than the one time.

Mr. Hammon was at once taken to his son’s residence only a couple of hundred yards away and medical aid was summoned. Everything was done for him that was possible but his advanced age and lack of vitality were against him in a fight for life, and at five o’clock Monday afternoon death relieved him of his suffering.

Mr. Hammon was in his seventieth year, having been born in Switzerland county on October 31, 1850. His wife preceded him in death by four-teen years. Besides his son Elbridge J. Hammon he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Rissa Henderson, wife of Dallas G. Henderson, postmaster at Holton, and by a step-son and step-daughter, namely, Mr. Hager, of Osgood, and Mrs. George Miller, of Holton.

Mr. Hammon was a faithful member of the Versailles K. of P. Lodge and the Knights assisted Rev. Bannister with the funeral service, which occurred at 2 o’clock this (Wednesday) afternoon at the Tanglewood church. Interment was in the Tanglewood cemetery.

Mr. Hammon was a man that was respected by everyone who knew him and the bereaved ones have the sympathy of all in their loss.

Marriage Notes for LUCY SHAW and NICHOLAS HAMMON:

After their marriage, Nick and Lucy lived for a time in Carroll County, Indiana, where Lucy’s uncle, Cary Allen Wooley resided. They returned to Ripley County, and following the death of Lucy’s mother, took over the Shaw farm, caring for Cat Shaw until his death.

The marriage was performed in the home of C. T. Shaw, Lucy’s father, by Stephen Chandler, Justice of the Peace.

Notes for RUFUS OLE HAMMON:

Rufus was a strong, gentle young man when he was killed. He was still living at home, and working at a sawmill west of the farm. A horse was responsible for his death, having crushed him in its stall, causing internal injuries. By the time the extent of the damage was realized, blood poisoning had forced him to bed with fever, chills and delirium, and treatment was of no consequence.

iv. MERTON ALVA HAMMON, b. 30 August 1882, Ripley County, Indiana211; d. 11 November 1884, Ripley County, Indiana211.

Notes for MERTON ALVA HAMMON:

Lucy was returning to the farm, driving the buckboard and cradling Merton. As she drove into the farmyard something startled the horse, perhaps a snake. The horse bolted, overturning the buckboard and throwing Lucy and her baby to the ground. Merton’s head struck against a rock, killing him instantly.

Marriage Notes for RISSA HAMMON and GEORGE HENDERSON:

Dallas Henderson worked at his brother Ben’s logging camp at Henderson, Mineral County, Montana. It was on a trip home that he first saw Rissa, and arranged to be introduced to her. After a brief courtship, they married at the Tanglewood Baptist Church, in Ripley County, after which they went to Henderson, Montana. When Dallas’ parents died, they returned to Indiana to take care of the farm.

About 1911, they retruned to the Montana lumber camp, where Rissa was appointed Postmaster. When fire destroyed the camp, they went to Port Townsend, Washington, for a short time, then to Oklahoma City, where relatives of Rissa operated a greenhouse and nursery. Shortly after arriving there, however, a tornado-breeding storm passed through, which blew them right back to Ripley County, Indiana, where they assumed responsibility for the family farm. Dallas cried auctions, dealt in real estate, and was appointed Postmaster of Holton, Indiana, for a term of four years beginning 1920. His Postal commission was signed by President Woodrow Wilson, and hangs in my study.

Rissa worked various times as a bank teller in Osgood, Indiana. Dallas was appointed first general manager of the Ripley County Farm Bureau, and Rissa served as its first (unpaid) bookkeeper. She was also busy helping to unload shipments, fueling, and in every other aspect of the operation. She was very proud of the fact that her long columns of addition passed the scrutiny of all state audits with not a correction to her math-work.

Marriage performed by Reverend E. E. Connelley.
