Wives and Children of Eli George Grimshaw

Eli George married Hanna Christiana Sudds, the daughter of Joseph and Harriet Sudds. She was born about 1841. Eli and Hanna had 3 children: Joseph Amos, born ca 1861 on Wolfe Island and baptized on August 9, 1861 in the Trinity Anglican Church, Wolfe Island, Ontario, Canada;/ Louisa Ann, born ca 1861; and Mary Jane, born ca 1865.

No information has been found on whether Eli and Hanna Christiana divorced legally. Hanna Christiana remarried John Moses on August 29, 1869 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. John Moses is the son of John Moses and Marceline Grimshaw. Marceline Grimshaw is the daughter of George and Charlotte (Menard) Grimshaw and therefore the sister to Alexander Eli and Eli George. By the time that Hanna Christiana married John Moses, Eli George had already been married to Sarah Elizabeth for a year and a half. John Moses died January 21, 1918 in Wallaceburg, Kent County, Ontario at the age of 73. Hanna Christiana and John Moses did not have any children but raised the 3 children of Eli George. In future censuses, the 3 children used the last name of Moses, not Grimshaw. The youngest daughter, Mary Jane listed her father as Eli Grimshaw in her marriage certificate for her second marriage, to John Diggan. Most other documents list John Moses as the father of these three children.

Eli George’s older brother, Alexander Eli was married to Sarah Ann (Thompson) Pepper. (see companion page) Sarah Ann had a son Edward Pepper and a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Pepper by her first marriage to Edward Pepper. Sarah Elizabeth Pepper was born June 3, 1850.

Eli George married Sarah Elizabeth Pepper, daughter of his brother’s wife. According to the website, http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/vreclyme.htm (a site that is no longer available), Eli and Sarah were married by Justice Jacob Snell on December 11, 1867 in the Town of Lyme, Jefferson County, New York. He was 29 and she was 17.

Eli and Sarah had only one child, James Leonard Grimshaw, born February 25, 1870 in Leroy, Three Mile Bay, Jefferson County, New York.

Obituary for Sarah Elizabeth Pepper Grimshaw Feury

An obituary for Sarah is shown below.

James Leonard and Martini (Christensen) Grimshaw and their family

James Leonard Grimshaw was born February 25, 1870 in Leroy, Three Mile Bay, Jefferson County, New York. James Leonard also went by the name of Leonard or Len. On June 5, 1895, Leonard married Martini Christensen. She was born April 22, 1874 in Tise Hjering Co, Denmark Jutland. Martini is the daughter of Christen Olesen and Anne Marie Christensen. In Denmark, the father’s first name with “sen” added to it becomes the surname of the children. Therefore, when Martini was still in Denmark, she would have been known as Martini Christensen. Once she came to America with her family, because her father’s surname was Olesen, she was known as Martini Olesen. She went by the first name of Martha which is the name on her tombstone.

James Leonard (Len) and Martha had the following children:

1- Myrtle V., born August 20, 1896 and died November 04, 1896
2- Louis Henry, born January 20, 1898 and died June 6, 1970
3- Rose E., born June 3, 1901 and died April 13, 1907
4- Eli Leonard, born October 18, 1903 and died August 10, 1970
5- William, born July 15, 1906 and died March 29, 1983

Eli Leonard Grimshaw

Eli Leonard is the grandfather of Terry (Grimshaw) Micks. He married Emma Jane Youngs on June 5, 1926 in Winona, Minnesota. An interesting note: Emma Jane Youngs is the daughter of John Hyland Youngs and his second wife, Matilda St. Clare. John Hyland Youngs’ first wife was Elizabeth Grimshaw, daughter of Alexander Eli Grimshaw and Sarah Ann Pepper. Both father and daughter were married to Grimshaws. Eli Leonard and Emma had two children who died in infancy and 6 children who lived to adulthood. The two children who died in infancy were Richard James who lived a week and Arnold Richard who was born prematurely and only lived a couple of hours. Those living to adulthood are William Leonard, Elmer Leroy, Esther Louise, Lewis James, Alice Helen and Donald Eugene. None are still living. Elmer is Terry (Grimshaw) Micks’ father.

The children who lived to adulthood are Robert James, Ruth Elaine, Muriel Odelle, Melvin (Butch) and Elvina. The children who died in infancy are Emery Jr, Clyde Gary and Charles Arthur.

Laura Bruce was found dead next to the railroad tracks in Ladysmith, Wisconsin on May 22, 1976. At the request of her son, Melvin, her case was reopened in 2005. Her body was exhumed, new evidence collected and 30 years after her death, it was determined to be a homicide. A man named Roy Beaulieu, the man who had initially indicated that he had found her body, was charged (in late 2006) and convicted of her murder (in 2007).
