Immigrants from Ashton-under-Lyne to Paterson, New Jersey

Aaron and Rosanna Grimshaw were born in England and were married in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1852. The family subsequently emigrated to New Jersey between 1860 and 1866, where Aaron and Rosanna lived out their lives in Paterson. Rosanna died in 1891, apparently of natural causes, and Aaron died by drowning in the Passaic River in 1896. Aaron remarried in late 1891 to Martha Jane Scott.

What is Known About the Lives of Aaron and Roseanna Grimshaw?
Aaron and Rosanna were married on June 7, 1852, at Holy Trinity Church in Ashton-under-Lyne. A photo of Aaron is shown in Figure 2, and an image of their marriage record appears in Figure 3. Aaron was a carpenter, specifically a joiner. Ashton-under-Lyne is located east of Manchester, as shown in Figure 4.

Not much has apparently been recorded of Aaron and Roseanna’s life in Paterson. The 1880 census of Paterson (see Figure 5 below) showed that Aaron was a retail liquor dealer. Roseanna died in 1891, and Aaron in 1896; both are buried in Laurel Grove cemetery. Two obituaries for Aaron (somewhat hard to read in the copies) are shown below; images of their death certificates are shown in Figure 6.

AARON GRIMSHAW DROWNED.
Walking Along the River Bank He Fell Into the Stream.
Aaron Grimshaw of Browertown, father of the well known George Grimshaw, et with death by drowning on Saturday night. Grimshaw is about 68 years old and had been on a visit to his daughter in this city. He boarded a white line car for his home at half past nine o’clock in the evening. He got off the car at Browertown and started for his home. It is supposed that he lost his footing on the river bank and rolled into the water in the dark. He was probablyh too weak to ake any struggle or outcry for help, or if he did no one ever heard him as there are no houses very near. The body was found floating in the river yesterday by a man crossing the Browertown bridge. He notified County Physician Johnson, who ordered “Dufford A.? Vandervort to remove the remains to the morgue.
The drowned man’s daughter calle at the morgue yesterday and recognized the body as that of her father. County Physician Johnson will grant a certificate, as the cause of death was doubtless purely accidental. The family will take charge of the remains today. The deceased leaves seven children, all adults, and a wife.

Fate of a Browertown Man Who Had ___ ___ a Visit to Paterson.
Aaron Grimshaw, 68 years old, of Browertown, was drowned in the river there Saturday night. Grimshaw was the father of the well known ____, George Grimshaw, who had figured in various ____ for a number of years, primarily as ___boy for a clothing firm, The older Grimshaw had come to Paterson to visit his daughter, who lives here, and he started for home, taking a car on the white line. It is believed that the old man lost his way after getting out of the car, fell into the river and was unable to swim. The body was noticed in the water yesterday by a man crossing the bridge at Jackson avenue. It was ____ and County Physician Johnson ____ ____ ____ and ordered it taken to the ____ ____ morgue. Later the remains were identified by Grimshaw’s daughter, and taken in charge by his family. Grimshaw leaves seven adult children and a wife. County Physician Johnson will grant a certificate.

Records and Photos of Aaron and Rosanna’s Descendants
The first four of Aaron and Rosanna’s children – Lucy, George, Emily and Hannah – were born in England between 1853 and 1860. Three more children – Jesse, Aaron Jr. and Mary – were born in New Jersey between 1866 and 1877. An eighth child died on the day it was born.

The oldest child, Lucy Ellen Grimshaw, married Frederick Tribe (original name of Naldret?) in 1870 and had three sons, William, James and Edward. Photos of these three sons as young men are shown in Figure 67 A photo of William in later life is shown in Figure 8.

Aaron Grimshaw, Frederick Tribe met with a tragic accidental death, at age 45, as recounted in the news story shown below. Lucy remarried, to Louis Nichols, after the death of Frederick.

Killed on the Rails – a Well-Known Horsemans Death, How It Happened a Nightmare
Another fatal accident occurred on the Paterson Railway companys line, and Fred Tribe the well-known Jockey, trainer, and horse owner was run down and killed by electric car 28 at the Monroe St. crossing, Passaic . No one saw the accident, and no one but the employees of the road who were in charge of the car can explain the sad affair. There were Edwin Jennings, an ex-park policeman who was conductor of the car and his motorman R.S. Voorhis. The story is that Tribe was lying in the center of the car track in the same spot mentioned and that the car passed over his body, the motor crushing the life out of the unfortunate man.
Tribe lives at the north end of the Clifton race track on Main Ave. There resides his wife and family. For the past year or so Tribe has been working in the Golden Red silk mill, employed as a picker. He followed this occupation just to keep his mind at ease as he was always an active man.
Yesterday he did not work, but in the afternoon with some relatives visited the Wild West show at the Clifton race track. In the evening Mr. Tribe visited the track again and later accompanied his visitors of the day to Passaic city taking an electric car to that place. He was in his shirt sleeves and apparently did not intend staying long from home. It was nearly ten oclock when he left his family according to the electric railway company report. It was 11:15 when the accident occurred. It was not until 2:00 that his family heard of the affair.
Motorman Voorhis declared that he saw nothing on the tracks but was alarmed when he heard the car dragging something along under the tracks and this made him bring his car to a standstill. He informed his conductor that something was wrong, and when Jennings ran back to see what the trouble was, he was horrified to find the body of a man, rolled like a ball lying in the center of the track.
This was the body of Tribe, but no one knew this until after he had been removed to Carrolls Morgue in Passaic when the morgue keeper opened the dead mans vest and found a gold watch in the inside pocket. On the inside of the case was the name Fred Tribe.
Another gold watch was found on him. This belonged to his son Eddie. This watch was badly crushed while Mr. Tribes watch was not in the least damaged.
The motorman and conductor of the ill-fated car reported the affair to the company office. From their story the car was going at a slow speed. Motorman Voorhis cannot explain, however, why he did not see the body lying on the track, if it was there as claimed. The headlight of the car is sufficiently strong to throw a glare of light 100 yards ahead of the car.
It is claimed by the dead mans family that he was standing in the middle of the track signaling for the car to stop when he was run down. A news reporter visited the Tribe home today and found the family plunged into grief. Jimmie, one of the sons, told the reporter that his father must have been run down by the car. In evidence of this he stated that his fathers head was badly battered in, a deep gash under the chin almost reached to his neck, while one of the feet was nearly severed from the leg. The body was lying in the front parlor of the house and the marks on the face and body were just as the young man stated. Mrs. Tribe, wife of the deceased, was almost heartbroken and refused the consolation of friends.
The funeral will occur next Thursday afternoon, and appropriate ceremonies will take place in St. Lukes chapel.
Fred Tribe was 45 years old and was born in Steyning, near Brighton, England . At the age of 9 his parents died and he was apprenticed to owner Goders stables at Findon. After displaying his abilities as a jockey he became attached to Lord Westmorelands stables and rode the then famous Merry Queen.
He was barely 18 years of age when he came to this country with William Sandford Preakness stables and was his lightweight jockey. Fred Tribe became famous in 1867 or 68 when the first followers of horses have often seen the American handicap was run off at Jerome Park, by winning it. The followers of horses have often seen the picture called “The False Start.” In it is shown young Tribe laying at the post while other jockeys are scrambling away from the post.
Horsemen respected the deceased for his many sterling qualities. It was only last May that the deceased entertained many of them at this brother-in-laws place on the Poppton Road when he celebrated his silver wedding. Tribes last appearance in the saddle was when he rode in the Old Guard Stakes at Clifton in 18??. Hs mount was King Vault, and he landed third.
He always loved to talk horses and his sons Jimmie, Willie, and Eddie inherit the same sport.
He has only one brother in this country, James, who was also a horseman. He resides at 78 Rip Van Winkle Ave. At present the Tribes stable at Clifton contains but three racers. These are Heel Tap, Lucy L, and Our Johnny.
Undertaker Shorter has charge of the body, Dr. Johnson having granted a burial certificate.
George Thomas Grimshaw
The second child, George Thomas Grimshaw, was born in England in 1855, married Martha Ellen Crawford on March 22, 1891, and died in 1907 in New Jersey. Martha was born in 1863. Emily Grimshaw (b. June 6, 1858) married Richard Thompson (b. 1855) on October 15, 1878 and had five children – Jennie, Charles, Richard, Aaron and Frederick. Richard died on December 3, 1937 in New Jersey, and Emily passed away on January 7, 1945 in Paterson, New Jersey.
Emily Grimshaw
Emily Grimshaw was born in 1858 in England and was married to Richard Thompson (b. 1855) in October 15, 1878. Emily and Richard had five children – Jennie, Charles, Richard, Aaron and Frederick. Richard died on December 3, 1937 in New Jersey and Emily on January 7, 1945.
Hannah Grimshaw
Hannah Grimshaw, fourth child of Aaron and Rosanna, was born in England in 1860 and married Robert White (b. 1851) on April 14, 1879. Robert and Hannah had five children – Rosanna, Charles, Mary, Robert and Ellen. Robert died sometime between 1887 and 1894, and Hannah remarried, to Benjamin Rosenstein, with whom she had three children – Benjamin, Robert, and Emily. Hannah died on November 23, 1908 in Paterson, and Benjamin died in 1953 in Newark, New Jersey. Hannah’s obituary of November 23, 1908, is provided below:
Mrs. Hanna White-Rosenstein ___ communicated.
After a short illness the soul of Hanna White-Rosenstein passed into eternal rest on Monday morning. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Butte, Governor street, surrounded by her adoring family.
Mrs. Rosenstein was known and loved by a vast circle of friends whom she had drawn to her by her many sterling qualities and the news of her death was a great shock and surprise.
During her illness Mrs. Rosenstein was a most patient sufferer, never complaining but putting her trust in the Lord whom she had endeavored to serve faithfully all through life, and when the Saviour called she passed peacefully into His presence.
Mrs. Rosenstein is survived by her husband, Benjamin Rosenstein, three daughters, Mrs. Charles Butte, Mrs. William A. Findlow, Miss E.M. White, four sons, Robert and Charles Benjamin and Edward Rosenstein, two sisters, Mrs. R. Thompson, Mrs. A. Mullenberg, and her brother, Aaron Grimshaw.
Jess Grimshaw
The fifth child, Jess Grimshaw, was born in 1866 in New Jersey and married George Barnford Shaw (b. February 1865) on November 1, 1884. They had eight children – Annie, Emma, Ruth, George Jr., Robert, William, Ellen and Walter. Jess died on December 10, 1905, and George passed away on October 24, 1924. A photo with George is presented in the next section.
Aaron Grimshaw, Jr.
Aaron Grimshaw, Jr., child number six, was born August 15, 1868 in Paterson, New Jersey and married Sarah Jane Birdsall (b. November 6, 1873) on about September 10, 1911. They had four kids – William, Hannah, Blanche, and Aaron. Aaron passed away in Paterson on April 23, 1940, and Sarah died on March 25, 1954. A photo with Aaron is provided in Figure 9. Sarah and the four children are shown in Figure 10. A family photo with Sarah and several children and later descendants is presented in Figure 11. A photo of William Grimshaw in his younger days appears in Figure 12. Roger Grimshaw, Aaron and Sarah’s grandson (son of August Grimshaw) and his wife, Frances (DeVita) Grimshaw are shown in Figure 13.

Mary Etta Grimshaw
The youngest child to survive to adulthood was Mary Etta, who was born October 1, 1871 in Paterson. She and Anton Mullenberg, (b. 1858 in Germany) were married on December 24, 1888 and had two children, Sybilla and Jessie. Anton Died on November 20, 1937 in New Jersey, and Mary lived until September 30, 1952, when she died in Totowa, New Jersey. Anton is shown with Aaron Grimshaw, Sr. in Figure 2, and Anton and Mary Etta are shown together in Figure 14.
